Highlanders Drop Saturday Tilt with Eagles

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford volleyball program fell in a tough 3-0 final to Winthrop Saturday afternoon inside the Dedmon Center.

  • Olivia Flanagan scored 10+ kills in both matches this weekend scoring 12 today.
  • Radford stacked the blocks against Winthrop finishing with nine total.
  • On 20 attack attempts, Sophie Paspal hit .250 with eight kills.
 
PLAY BY PLAY
The Highlanders and Eagles were locked in tight battles throughout Saturday's match despite the eventual 3-0 final. The Highlanders got off to a slow hitting start but took advantage of some Eagles errors to keep things close.
 
The two teams traded points throughout up to a 21-20 Eagles advantage late. Radford got a kill from Katrina Miller, but the Eagles finished the set on a 4-1 run to take the early 1-0 lead.
 
The Eagles kept the run going into the second set jumping out to a 4-0 lead. Kills from Flanagan kept the Highlanders close, but another 3-0 run by the Eagles stretched the lead to 9-4. The teams traded points until Radford got a big 4-0 run to pull back to just down one at 13-12.
 
Radford would pull ahead briefly at 21-20 after some Eagles errors. A timeout allowed the visitors to regroup, however, and take over the final stretch of the set to win 25-23 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
The Highlanders got off to a much better start in set three getting kills from Flanagan and Miller and lead 7-4. An 8-0 run by the Eagles would prove costly, though, allowing them to regain a 13-9 lead. A 4-1 run pulled Radford back into the match as Kennedy Robinson tallied a couple kills. Radford wouldn't be able to reclaim a lead before the set went final as Winthrop held on 25-23 and won the match 3-0.
 
AROUND THE BIG SOUTH
  • High Point worked quickly in a 3-0 sweep over Gardner-Webb.
  • UNC Asheville earned a big 3-1 home win over Presbyterian.
  • USC Upstate and Charleston Southern finish the weekend slate with a 4 p.m. start.
 
UP NEXT
The Highlanders go on the road for the final time this regular season beginning their road trip at Presbyterian on Friday, November 8th.
