Softball Reverses Results and Splits Day Two at Bash in the Boro

STATESBORO, Ga. –The Radford softball program split their pair of games in day two at the Bash in the Boro Saturday falling to UMass in the first game 2-7 before defeating Merrimack in the late game 7-2.

Game 1
Defensive errors came back to haunt Radford in their first game of the day as a tough fourth inning that allowed UMass to score six of its runs led to the eventual 7-2 final. After coming into the game late, Abby Peace continued her great start to the season with no earned runs over 3.2 innings of work.

The first inning hosted a pair of doubles plays for both squads as Chloe Greene got the starting nod in the circle for her first action of the 2024 season. After a double, an error allowed that runner to score to give UMass the 1-0 lead.

Trying to get the offense moving, Radford did so without recording a hit in the third inning. Emily Smith walked, Victoria Boyd bunted her over to third, and Lexie Roberts got the sacrifice fly to even the game at one-all.

In the top of the fourth, errors haunted the Highlanders as UMass put up six runs with only two earned in the entire frame. The offense had time to work back that deficit but would be held to just one run over the final four frames.

In the bottom of the seventh with two outs, freshmen got some good looks in as Amanda Lee doubled with two outs. Amber Wolfe got the ball in play and an error allowed Lee to score. That was all the Highlanders would get, though, as the game went final 7-2.

Game 2
The Highlanders slowed things down in the night cap of Saturday's action drawing nine walks to fuel their offense towards a 7-2 win. Malorie Reeves got the start for Radford, the fourth different starting pitcher for Radford so far this season and was impressive dialing up five scoreless innings.

After both teams were scoreless through the opening inning it was Radford who struck first. Abby Wilson led things off with a single and Wolfe bunted her over to third. Kari Shedrick doubled, her first big hit of the evening, for the early 1-0 lead.

Reeves tossed another scoreless frame allowing Radford to strike for even more runs in the third. The first three Highlanders reached base drawing two walks and a single to load the bases with none out. A wild pitch scored the first run and Rachel Smith grounded out to push the lead to 3-0.

Not done yet, Wilson doubled in another runner to go up 4-0 while Amanda Lee singled Wilson home for the 5-0 lead. That gave Reeves all the breathing room she'd need as her third, fourth and fifth innings were flawless.

Radford got another run in the fifth thanks to some more timely walks and a Shedrick RBI single. In the sixth inning up 6-0, Ellen Palya entered the game. Despite surrendering a pair of runs over the final two innings, Palya racked up four strikeouts to shut the door on Merrimack for the 7-2 win.
