Softball Splits Day One at Georgia Classic

RADFORD, Va. –The Radford softball program split their opening day at the Georgia Classic Friday afternoon with a 4-1 victory over Dartmouth before falling 8-0 in their match-up with (RV) Virginia Tech.

Game 1
Facing Dartmouth for just the second time in program history, it was Malorie Reeves who got the starting nod and her defense backed her up in a big way throughout the game. After a three-up, three-down first inning, Lexie Roberts led off her big day with a single but was left stranded at second.

Dartmouth led off the second with a hit, but that lead off runner was quickly erased as Radford turned a 6-4-3 double play. Radford got another runner into scoring position in the bottom of the second but was again held scoreless.

The Big Green threatened with two straight hits to start the top of the third. Once again, Radford's defense got a timely double play as a line out to Rachel Smith at third turned into two outs as she picked off the runner at first. In the bottom half of the inning, Radford would finally strike for the first lead.

Abby Bossler led things off with a single and Grace Bechtol replaced her on the base paths. After Roberts placed a perfect bunt hit, a throwing error moved both her and Bechtol into scoring position. Abby Wilson came up with an RBI knock as she hit a sacrifice fly that scored Bechtol for the 1-0 lead.

Dartmouth would respond with a sacrifice fly of their own to tie the game in the top of the fourth, breaking Reeves' streak of scoreless innings to start the season at 12.2. With Dartmouth still threatening to score, Radford turned around another 6-4-3 double play to escape the inning still tied at one-all.

Radford wouldn't wait long to retake the lead as in the bottom half of the inning Amber Wolfe hit a double to left field that scored Kari Shedrick making it 2-1 Radford. Abby Peace entered the game in the fifth and earned two strikeouts to keep the lead intact. In the bottom of the fifth, Radford added on.

Roberts picked up another infield hit and quickly stole second. After Wilson walked, Cassi Barbato singled to score Roberts making it 3-1. Amanda Lee would earn another sacrifice fly for Radford as her flyout brought Wilson home for the 4-1 lead.

Peace would work another perfect frame in the sixth and in the seventh navigated around a pair of hits that started the inning to retire three straight and finalize the 4-1 victory.

Game 2
In Radford's second game of the day, New River Valley foes met for the 59th time in program history but for the first time ever on a neutral field. The Hokies came into the meeting receiving votes or ranked in all four major softball polls while Radford was riding a three-game winning streak.

Freshman Morgan Cooper got the starting nod for Radford and immediately navigated out of trouble in the first. After an error and hit had runners on the corners, Cooper picked up a big strikeout to escape the jam scoreless.

Roberts picked up right where she left off in game one singling to the pitcher to lead off the offense but was left stranded at third after picking up a stolen base. The Hokies would tack on a run via a homer in the top of the second for the 1-0 advantage. Radford got another runner in scoring position in the bottom half as Wolfe walked and advanced to second, but she was stranded.

The Hokies struck big in the third inning, tallying five of their eventual eight runs all in a single frame. Peace entered the game to control the damage and would give up just a run over 1.1 innings pitched.

Natalie Jones got her first pitching appearance of the season to begin the fifth and tossed a scoreless frame of work in that inning before allowing a lone run in the sixth. The Highlanders brought multiple runners into scoring position but couldn't fully break through being shutout for the first time this season in the 8-0 loss.
