Offensive Outburst Pushes Softball to Doubleheader Split with Queens (NC)

RADFORD, Va. –The Radford softball program split their home doubleheader Tuesday afternoon with Queens (NC) falling in the first contest 7-1 before rebounding in a big way for a 9-6 win in game two.

Game 1
In the first-ever meeting between the two programs, Radford was locked in a pitcher's duel in the first game of the day before a costly error opened things up for the visitors. Morgan Cooper would throw 5.2 innings allowing just three earned runs out of the six the Royals scored.

In the first inning, both offenses were retired as Cooper picked up her first strikeout of the day. The second replicated the first as Cooper picked up another strikeout retiring six in a row.

After Queens got their first hit in the third, the Royals laid down a bunt and got a throwing error that put two runners in scoring position with none out. The first run came in off a pop up to the infield that found no man's land, but otherwise Cooper silenced the threat. She picked up a groundout, pop out and strikeout as the Royals pushed forward a 3-0 lead.

Amanda Lee would earn Radford's first hit in the bottom of the third and Amber Wolfe got her to second on a bunt, but Lee was stranded there. Queens added their first earned run of the day in the fourth on a two-out hit.

In the fifth, the Highlanders were able to strike back to pull things closer without recording a hit. Kari Shedrick drew a walk and Lee was hit by a pitch to put two on. A double steal moved both into scoring position and a sacrifice fly by Wolfe made it just a 4-1 game.

With two outs in the sixth Queens struck for three more runs to solidify the eventual 7-1 final score. Ellen Palya entered to pitch the final 1.1 innings allowing just one run while picking up a strikeout.

Game 2
In game two, the Highlanders offense bounced back in a big way totaling 13 hits for nine runs. Cassi Barbato was at the middle of that charge, responsible for five of those nine runs.

In the first, Queens tagged on an early run off a one-out solo homer. Radford responded quickly in the bottom half as Lexie Roberts dropped down a bunt single and stole second. Abby Wilson crushed a double to right center that scored Roberts and tied the game at one-all.

The Royals responded with another lone run in the second thanks to a squeeze bunt that put Radford down 2-1. The first two Radford batters of the second immediately reached base as Shedrick and R. Smith both singled. Wolfe laid down another perfect bunt to advance both into scoring position.

E. Smith had the first big hit as her RBI single drove in both Shedrick and R. Smith. Roberts followed with another bunt single, forcing a Royals pitching change. That didn't stop Radford as Barbato laced a single up the middle to score Roberts and E. Smith. Abby Bossler kept the hit train rolling with Radford's fifth straight hit that scored Roberts. An RBI groundout by Lee capped the big inning for Radford as it scored Wilson for the 7-2 lead.

Starting pitcher Chloe Greene would dial up a scoreless third inning in turn as Radford added on a bit more in the bottom half. After Wolfe singled, E. Smith drew a walk, and Roberts drew a walk the Royals made a pitching change back to game one's starter. In a tough battle, Barbato came through again with a two-RBI single making it 9-2 Radford.

Greene used a double play to keep the Royals scoreless in the fourth and in the fifth worked through some trouble and a pair of errors to induce another double play and keep the lead at 9-4.

Tori Boyd would earn a single in the fifth after a Wolfe walk, but Radford was held scoreless. Greene tossed a three-up, three-down sixth before the Royals got a comeback attempt started in the seventh.

After Greene retired the first batter, the Royals collected a hit forcing Radford to make a pitching change. The Royals got two more hits to tighten the game at 9-6 as Radford made a second pitching change to bring in Abby Peace. Peace dialed up two straight outs to slam the door shut and collect her fourth save of the season in the 9-6 win.
