RADFORD, Va. – Radford women's lacrosse picked up their third win in arow against Fairleigh Dickinson 13-10 at home Tuesday afternoon.
Coming off the game against Howard where she earned her 100th goal,
Margaret Gleason scored the first goal of today's game to give Radford the early 1-0 advantage. Next to score was
McKenzie Hines who took advantage of a free position shot, making it a 2-0 lead for Radford. After nearly four minutes scoreless, FDU fought their way back, scoring back-to-back goals to tie the contest. The Highlanders maintained possession to end the quarter after
Josie Helpard caused a turnover, earning a ground ball.
The second quarter began in the Knight's favor as they were able to use a free position opportunity to take their only lead of the game. After a strong defensive performance on both sides,
Taylor Rogahn caused a turnover and scooped up the ground ball to give Radford the opening they needed. The Highlanders set up their play, and with a feed from
Ashlyn Grogan,
Maddie Abbott scored her first goal of the game to tie the game at three-all.
Helpard caused another turnover, giving possession back to Radford. Recognizing the success of their previous play, Grogan fed the ball to Abbott for another goal to take the 4-3 lead.
River Rupert then caused a turnover, allowing
Mady Cheney to scoop up the ball. From there,
Hannah Hanger saw an opening, tossed the ball to
Kaitlyn Lytton and she scored to further the lead by two. At the end of the first half Radford led 5-4.
The third quarter brought Abbott her hat trick as she was first to score fresh out of the break. Radford continued their run with goals by
Molly O'Brien, Hanger and Lytton to secure a 9-4 lead. From there, the Knights went on a run of their own and were able to close the gap to two at 9-7.
The Highlanders weren't ready to let go of the lead yet as Cheney took advantage of the free position and earned her first goal of the game to start the final quarter. Abbott found the back of the net for the fourth time and put the game at 12-9. FDU retaliated to make it a two point game once again.
Reece Morrish was then sent to the draw control for Radford. She won and immediately took off to the other end to get the final goal of the game securing the Highlanders' third straight victory 13-10.
KEY STATS
- Olivia Hunter's save percentage was over 60%, securing 16 saves on 26 attempts.
- Ashlyn Grogan picked up a single-game career high of five ground balls.
- Maddie Abbott achieved her first hat trick of the season.
