Softball Highlights Day Two at Thundering Herd Invitational with Huge Victory Over Purdue

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. –The Radford softball program picked up a big win in the early portion of their 2023-24 campaign Saturday afternoon with 6-5 victory over Purdue. In the Highlanders second game of the day, the team came up short 5-0 against the hosts Marshall.

Game 1
Radford earned one of its biggest wins in recent memory in their first game of the day against Purdue as the team won their first game against a power opponent since 2019.

The Highlanders didn't wait long to get the offense fire up as the team immediately took a 1-0 lead in the first. Lexie Roberts began the game with a single and immediately stole second. A groundout moved her to third and with two outs Rachel Smith got her first big hit with a single to center for the early lead.

Chloe Greene tossed a perfect bottom of the first allowing the team to grow their lead in the second. Abby Bossler drew a walk and Emily Smith was hit by a pitch to get Radford in scoring position. Amanda Lee broke through for a double that scored Bossler making it 2-0.

Radford wasn't done yet, as Abby Wilson singled to score E. Smith. Cassi Barbato followed with a sacrifice fly to score Lee making it 4-0. Radford got its fourth run as R. Smith got her second RBI with a single to left scoring Roberts once again.

Purdue would threaten to score by loading the bases in the second, but Greene ended the threat unscathed to keep things at 5-0. In the third Purdue finally broke through striking with a two-run homer.

After three straight Boilermakers reached base, Reeves entered with a tough task of preserving a 5-2 lead with bases loaded and one out. Reeves allowed two runners to cross, but that was it as the sophomore came up huge at the end to finish the threat and keep the lead intact.

In the fourth Radford picked up a crucial run to grow their lead. With two outs already in the inning, Roberts and Wilson singled setting up Barbato to collect an RBI single to left scoring Roberts for the 6-4 lead.

Purdue got one run back in the bottom half scoring on a wild pitch, but Reeves kept things quiet otherwise. Reeves would strand another runner in scoring position in the fifth to keep Radford's lead at 6-5.

Morgan Cooper entered to pitch in the sixth and worked around a two out double to preserve the lead. Radford led off the seventh with a pair of hits from Wilson and Barbato, but a double play wiped out the chance to extend the lead. Cooper didn't falter after allowing a leadoff single in the seventh, forcing three straight outs to seal the 6-5 victory over Purdue.

Game 2
Radford's offense would be held scoreless in the second game of the day, but the team still strung together some solid scoring opportunities early.

Getting right to it once again, Roberts singled, Wilson was hit by pitch, and an error put Barbato on and had the bases loaded with none out. The scoring threat stalled there, however, as Marshall retired the next three straight batters.

Cooper picked up from game one and dialed a scoreless first to keep things tied. In the second, Radford threated again as E. Smith and Abby Bossler got back-to-back hits with one out. A costly caught stealing ended the threat and kept things at zero-all.

Marshall finally broke the ice in the second with a solo home run for the 1-0 advantage. From there, the Highlanders offense would be blanked seeing just a few base runners in the sixth thanks to a walks by Barbato and Yates plus a hit from Lee.

Three runs in the third and a lone run in the fourth was what gave Marshall its 5-0 lead, and that score would hold until the final to close out Saturday's action.

UP NEXT
Radford will close out its weekend tournament action tomorrow morning with an early 10:30 a.m. first pitch against Butler.
