Softball Splits Pair of Exciting Games in Doubleheader at UNC Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. –The Radford softball program split their doubleheader at UNC Greensboro Wednesday afternoon in a pair of exciting matchups. The Highlanders fell in the opening game in a nine-inning affair before bouncing back for a 4-3 victory in the second game.

Game 1
Coming off a streak of offensive slugfests, the Highlanders were locked in a different kind of battle in game one as both pitchers were cruising through the early stages. Neither team would score until the sixth inning in a game that eventually would go 9 innings before a walk-off hit by UNC Greensboro.

Abby Peace was in the circle the entire way for the Highlanders and tossed eight innings of an incredible performance against a potent Spartans offense. After the Spartans led off the first with a single, Peace got two straight outs while her catcher Abby Wilson caught a runner stealing second for a clean opening frame.

Peace followed with three-up three-down performances in the second and third inning before the Spartans would threaten in the fourth. With one out, UNC Greensboro got two runners on with a single and walk. Peace kept calm and after a hot shot to first base, the first baseman Kari Shedrick put a glove on it to catch the liner, step on first, and collect the unassisted double play.

After both teams were held scoreless in the fifth, it was Shedrick who would come up big once again in the sixth. With two outs and a runner on second, Shedrick just missed a two-run homer that hit the very top of the center field wall. Wilson was able to score easily, however, and Radford took the first lead of the game at 1-0.

The Spartans went down in order in the sixth, but a lead off solo homer in the seventh would be enough to send the game to extra innings. Outside of a two-out hit in the eighth, Radford's offense wasn't able to get hot again as UNC Greensboro would break through in the ninth thanks to a two-run walk-off homer sealing the game with a 3-1 final.

Game 2
The Highlanders didn't wait long in game two to get the bats moving for an early lead. Lexie Roberts led things off with a single and swiping second. With two outs, Shedrick remains scorching hot this week as she crushed a two-run homer to center for the 2-0 advantage. The two-run homer was Shedrick's third such two-run home run in four games.

Morgan Cooper got the starting nod for Radford's pitching efforts and worked around a two-out single to keep the Spartans scoreless early. Cooper worked masterfully through her first six innings of work allowing just one run, a solo homer in the bottom of the third.

Through three innings still up 2-1, Cooper retired nine straight between the fourth and sixth innings to allow the offense to add to the lead. In the sixth, Roberts continued her great game with a triple to right center. Cassi Barbato grounded out to get Roberts home and make it a 3-1 lead.

In the seventh Radford would pick up a crucial run from the duo of Tori Boyd and Taylor Breidt. With an out in the inning, Boyd continued her hot hitting of late with a strong double to right. Breidt stepped up and delivered singling off the second base bag which allowed the speedy Boyd to come home and make it a 4-1 lead.

That fourth run would prove pivotal for the Highlanders in the bottom of the seventh. UNC Greensboro began the inning with back-to-back home runs to quickly tighten the game at 4-3. After a single, Radford went to the bullpen and asked Ellen Palya to try and shut things down.

The defense behind Palya secured the out on a sacrifice bunt that moved the tying run to second. A groundout moved said runner to third with just one out remaining. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases with the heart of the Spartans order stepping up. Palya didn't back down, picking up a huge strikeout with the game on the line to seal the 4-3 win and her first save of the season.
