CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Big South Conference revealed its second look at the 2023-24 Sasser Cup standings on Wednesday, with the Radford Highlanders checking in at third overall, averaging 6.00 points.
In the women's all-sports standings Radford sits at second place averaging 7.20 points thanks to high finishes by women's basketball (7.5) and women's indoor track and field (7.0). For the men's all-sports standings, Radford currently sits in seventh averaging 4.00 points.
Radford women's basketball was the departments' highest point-earner this winter thanks to the program's third-place finish in the standings and 11th all-time appearance Big South Championship. The third-seeded Highlanders earned victories over No. 6 Winthrop in the quarterfinals and No. 2 USC Upstate in the semifinals earning a spot in the conference's championship contest.
The women's indoor track and field program also had another great winter season to contribute to the Highlanders' standing. The Highlanders placed third overall at the Big South Championships with two individual champions and a first-place finish in the 4000m DMR.
The Sasser Cup Trophy is named for former Big South Commissioner Buddy Sasser (1989-96) and is awarded to the Big South member institution with the most successful year athletically, based on an average points system. Points are awarded for both regular-season and tournament finishes in each of the League's 19 championships, and the average of the combined total is used to determine the overall point allocation in the respective sport.
