Dominant Pitching Paves Way to Doubleheader Split at Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. –The Radford softball program used a pair of strong pitching performances Saturday afternoon to split their doubleheader with Charleston Southern dropping the first game 3-0 before coming back to take the second contest 6-1.

Game 1
In Radford's first game, Chloe Greene would get the starting nod and dialed up seven innings of solid work despite the eventual 3-0 final.

Charleston Southern would manufacture a clean run to take an early 1-0 lead in the first. Rachel Smith began the second with a single and advanced to second by a bunt but was stranded there.

The Buccaneers would add on another run in the third to go up 2-0 while Radford's offense tried to find its footing. After a perfect bottom of the fourth by Greene, the offense got its best chance so far in the fifth.

Emily Smith drew a walk and with two outs both Emma Yates and Amanda Lee singled to load the bases. Radford's rally ended there, however, and Charleston Southern would scratch across their final run of the day in the bottom half of the fifth.

Radford's offense stalled from there, only drawing a walk over the last two frames, allowing Charleston Southern to take game one.

Game 2
The superb pitching would continue into the second contest of the day, this time coming from Abby Peace who had a huge rebound performance.

After neither team saw a base runner in the first inning, Charleston Southern threatened to score early again with a two-out rally in the second. After back-to-back walks, the Buccaneers got runners on second and third thanks to a wild pitch. Peace was able to avoid any damage as she battled through a 10-pitch at bat to force a groundout and end the inning.

In the third, the Highlanders' offense rewarded Peace. E. Smith began the inning with an infield single and made it to second thanks to a sacrifice bunt by Abby Bossler. After an error moved E. Smith to third and an infield single by Lexie Roberts loaded the bases, Abby Wilson grounded out but picked up the RBI for the 1-0 advantage.

The Buccaneers were unable to decipher Peace who cruised through the third and fourth innings to keep it a 1-0 Radford lead. In the fifth, Radford's offense would finally break through.

Bossler began the fifth with a hit by pitch but was replaced on the bases by Amanda Lee thanks to a fielder's choice. Another costly error by the Buccaneers and an infield single by Abby Wilson would load the bases with just one out.

Rachel Smith was patient at the plate and worked an 11 pitch at bat that resulted in a walk that extended the lead to 2-0. Kari Shedrick, staying hot, singled up the middle to score two more and make it 4-0 Radford. The Highlanders dialed up a double steal to perfection making it 5-0. Capping off the big inning was Yates who singled in Shedrick for the 6-0 lead.

From there, Peace was able to cruise the rest of the way to help seal the win. A two-out double gave Charleston Southern its lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth, but perfect sixth and seventh innings left the Buccaneers no room for a comeback in a 6-1 final.
