Lancers Takes Series Finale from Highlanders

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Radford softball program fell in their series final to Longwood Sunday afternoon in a game that slipped away late 8-2.

The freshman Morgan Cooper got the starting nod for the Highlanders, the third different starting pitcher for Radford this weekend, and got off to a solid start. Both teams would be held scoreless until Longwood tagged on a pair of runs in the second thanks in part to a home run.

Longwood extended their lead to 3-0 in the third as Radford searched for its first hit which came in the fourth. Cassi Barbato led off the inning with a single while Rachel Smith and Abby Wilson also singled to load the bases with one out. Abby Bossler would break the ice with a sacrifice fly making it a 3-1 game.

After two straight Lancers reached to start their half of the fourth, Abby Peace entered the game and got three straight outs to keep the game within reach. Radford would strike for another run to tighten things further in the fifth.

Emily Smith began the inning with a single and with two outs Cassi Barbato singled to move her to third. Still down to their last out in the inning, Kari Shedrick came through with a clutch hit to score E. Smith and make it a 3-2 game.

Unfortunately, Radford wasn't able to strike for any more after that. The Lancers struck for their biggest inning in the sixth scoring five runs to pull away and finish the game at an 8-2 final.

UP NEXT
The Highlanders return home after six straight road games to close out the regular season with five straight home games. Radford will host ETSU on Tuesday April 23rd and will also be honoring the team's seniors for senior day prior to the first game.
