RADFORD, Va. - The Radford Baseball team dropped the series finale to Gardner-Webb on Sunday evening at Carter Memorial after a ninth inning rally to tie the game wouldn't be enough as the Runnin' Bulldogs were able to secure the winning run in the tenth inning to win 4-3.
The first three innings of the series finale saw the Highlanders locked in a pitcher's duel with Gardner-Webb. Jimmy Lovelace, who got the nod to start at the mound for the Highlanders, would keep the Runnin' Bulldogs off the scoreboard in the first, retire the side in the second, picking up a strikeout in the process, and stranded to two runners in the third to give him the three clean innings.
However, Gardner-Webb would finally break through in the fourth after a two-run homer would put them on the board and a sacrifice bunt to allow their runner on third to reach home, giving them the 3-0 lead heading to the fifth.
The two sides would lock back in a pitcher's duel from the fifth to eighth innings of today's game. Trey Ludy would keep Gardner-Webb scoreless in the fifth and Raymond Ladd would sub in at mound for Ludy in the sixth and continue to keep the Runnin' Bulldogs off the board in that stretch.
Ladd would retire the Gardner-Webb side in the top of the ninth to keep the Highlanders within three heading into the bottom of the inning. The Highlanders found the inning they were looking for to finally tie this one up. Cameron Pittman would walk to first and then be brought home by a double to center field from Conner Butler to give Radford their first run. Carson Bell would follow up with a double to right field to score Butler for the Highlanders' second run. A single to center field by Zack Whitacre would advance Bell to third and a wild pitch would finally bring Bell home for the game tying score and have this one move to extra innings at 3-3.
Gardner-Webb would respond in the tenth with a solo shot home run to left field to retake the lead. The Highlanders would search for a response in the bottom of the inning but were unable to come up with it as Gardner-Webb would seal the win at 4-3.
