BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Radford women's tennis program fell in a tight match at Gardner-Webb Wednesday afternoon despite a trio of tiebreakers on the top three singles flights that just didn't go the Highlanders' way.
To begin the match, Radford had one of its most dominant doubles performances of the spring season. Julia Abrams and Emily Brandow were dominant on court one making quick work of their opponent to win 6-2. After the Runnin' Bulldogs took court three, the duo of Lexi Smolder and Ameek Batth responded in a big way to clinch the 1-0 advantage winning 6-3.
In singles play, Gardner-Webb grabbed victories on courts five and six while Smolder stayed hot with a strong 7-5, 6-4 win on court four to even the match at 4-4. That pushed the focus to the top three singles flights where action went into a tiebreaker third set on all three courts.
Gardner-Webb would take the 5-2 win by the match's end despite furious comeback attempts from Brandow, Abrams and Michaela Stephens.
Radford sticks to conference play when it hosts UNC Asheville this Saturday, April 6th for their first home conference match of the season.
