Highlanders Split Doubleheader Against Longwood to Finish Season

RADFORD, Va. - The Radford Baseball team split the doubleheader against Longwood on Friday evening at Sherman Carter Memorial Stadium to close out the season.

GAME ONE

Longwood would be the ones to open the scoring as they would put up a single run in the first to take an early 1-0 lead in game one of the doubleheader. The Highlanders would immediately respond with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning after Breckin Nace would single up the middle to score Zack Whitacre

The Highlanders would take the lead in the second after a knock to right field by Gavin Troutman would drive in Bell, giving the Highlanders a 2-1 lead heading into the third. The Lancers would bring in two runs in the top of the third, but Radford would respond with two runs in return in the same inning. Zack Whitacre would homer to left field to make it three apiece, then later in the inning a sacrifice fly by Jhonkeanu Perez would score Breckin Nace to regain the lead.

The Highlanders would lock in a pitcher's duel with the Lancers that began in the fourth and lasted until the seventh. Scott Rouse would retire the side in the fourth and keep Longwood off the board in the fifth and sixth. Drew Stanley would come in at mound in the seventh and retire the side to start things off and follow up by striking out the side in the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth, the Highlanders would tack on their final two runs of game one of the doubleheader after Carson Bell would homer to left center to drive in Nace and himself for the two runs. Longwood would get one back, hitting a home run in the ninth, but it wouldn't be enough for the Lancers as Stanley would get the last out for Radford to take game one of the doubleheader at 6-4.

GAME TWO

The Highlanders would bring in two runs early in the first to open the scoring in the final game of the series. Zack Whitacre would double to right field to score Pittman from third. Nace would follow up with a double of his own to drive in Zack Whitacre for the second run of the inning. In the second, Grantham would make it a three-run lead for the Highlanders as he would hit a solo shot homer to left center.

In the third, Longwood would hit a grand slam to overtake the Highlanders at 4-3 heading into the fourth. In the fifth, Pittman would leadoff with a triple to right center and Keen would knock a single to right center to bring Pittman to home and tie the game back up at 4-4.

However, in the sixth, the Lancers would score a run to retake the lead at 5-4. Longwood would add on five more in the seventh to push their lead to 10-4 before heading into the eighth.

The Highlanders would rally in the eighth, scoring six runs to once again tie things back up in game two of the doubleheader. With the bases loaded, Nace would hit a sacrifice fly to bring Grantham in for a run. With the bases loaded again after a Bell walk that would advance Zack Whitacre to second and Keen to third, Perez would be walked to bring in Keen and continue to chip away at the Longwood lead. Troutman would be walked as well to score Zack Whitacre and make it a 10-7 game. Brady Whitacre instantly followed up with a single to left center to lead Bell and Perez home and cut the Longwood lead to one. A wild pitch would bring in Troutman for the sixth run of the inning and tie the game at 10-10.

Longwood would score a run in the ninth to once again take the lead, but the Highlanders kept fighting, scoring one of their own in the bottom of the inning. Bell would answer the call to tie it up with a double to left center to plate Nace from second and send this one to extras. The Lancers would retake the lead for the last time of the night as they would bring in a run in the eleventh inning to make it a 12-11 game. Radford wouldn't find an answer in the bottom of the inning and would see Longwood take game two of the doubleheader.
