Cooper Flirts with No Hitter as Radford Takes Season Finale Against Presbyterian

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball program took down Presbyterian 3-0 behind a masterful performance from freshman Morgan Cooper, who came two outs away from a no hitter, Saturday afternoon.

Radford closed out the regular season on a high note, winning the weekend series against the Blue Hose. Cooper took to the circle and was dominant early and often trying to beat forecasted heavy rain.

Cooper struck out the first batter she faced in a three-up, three-down first. Radford got two runners on in the bottom half but stranded both. Cooper went back to work and despite allowing a walk, she retired two straight including a comebacker to the mound to keep things scoreless.

Emma Yates began the bottom of the second with a well struck double. After Abby Bossler singled through the left side to move Yates to third, the duo combined for a double steal allowing Yates to touch home and make it a 1-0 Radford lead.

Despite the thin margin for error, Cooper was unfazed. The freshman picked up two more strikeouts in a perfect third inning. Radford got back-to-back singles to start the bottom of the third forcing a Blue Hose pitching change. The change in the circle worked, as three straight outs kept it a 1-0 game.

Cooper was perfect again in the fourth retiring three straight. In the bottom half, her offense gave her some cushion to work with. After two straight outs, Lexie Roberts began the rally singling to left and swiping second. Cassi Barbato shot a single to right allowing Roberts to score for a 2-0 lead.

Kari Shedrick wasn't contempt with leaving things at a 2-0 advantage. Shedrick crushed a hanging pitch to left and ran all the way to third for her first triple of the season and second of her Radford career. The triple scored Barbato and gave Radford all the offense it would need up 3-0.

In the fifth, Cooper battled through a pop-up rain shower to retire three straight. The freshman was officially in range of a no hitter and kept up the elite work. The sixth was more of the same as she picked up two more strikeouts.

A groundout began the top of the seventh putting Cooper two outs away, but a well-struck single to right broke up the historic effort. After a walk, Cooper settled back in and retired two straight to end the game and record her first career shutout in a 3-0 final.
