Howard’s 1000th Career Dig Highlights Action at Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Radford volleyball program fell to Gardner-Webb in a 3-1 final Saturday afternoon despite close battles in every set. Miranda Howard highlighted the match, recording the 1,000th dig in her career.

KEY STATS
  • Aubrey Hatch led the team in kills with 15, a new single match career high for the sophomore.
  • Rylee Sloss once again eclipsed 10 kills, her fourth straight match at the mark.
  • Howard's 35 digs shattered her previous single match career high, helping her move easily past the career 1,000 career digs mark. She is just the 13th Highlander to ever reach the milestone.
  • Radford recorded 14 more kills than Gardner-Webb, but ran into 11 more errors including 12 blocks by the Runnin' Bulldogs.

PLAY BY PLAY
The first set of the day was the most dominant for the Highlanders who jumped ahead early and didn't look back. Aces by Lea Gage and Hatch's first kill of the day put Radford ahead 7-2. Early on, Gage would lead the Highlanders in kills with three in the first set alone as the team took advantage of opponent miscues.

Later in the first set, Radford got a 6-1 run thanks to two kills from Kennedy Robinson to build their biggest lead of the day at 20-11. Alana Kolb would also tally three kills in the latter half of the set with Hatch finishing off the set with a kil as Radford took a 1-0 lead behind a 25-17 first set decision.

Hatch would continue firing into the second set to help Radford have a brief edge. Set two would be much tighter throughout, though, as Radford's biggest lead came at 19-13. Gardner-Webb came back with an extended 6-0 run that flipped the set on its head. The Highlanders were able to battle back to force deuce but ultimately came up short 25-27.

Radford's offense was still able to rally off kills behind the work of Sloss, Hatch and Roberts in set three but fell behind due to another long run by Gardner-Webb. A 5-1 spurt by the Runnin' Bulldogs put them ahead 17-12 and the Highlanders didn't come back ultimately dropping set three 25-21.

Radford would look to force another five-set affair, but a late run in the final stretch of the set sunk those hopes. The Highlanders were ahead 22-17, but the hosts responded with a 4-0 run through a timeout that tightened the set. Things eventually slipped away, as Radford wasn't able to convert ahead 25-24 and eventually fell 25-27 to drop the match 3-1.
