Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Highlanders Upended at #18 North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Radford men's basketball program showed promise but came up short in a tough environment Tuesday night, falling to #18 North Carolina 89-74.

KEY STATS
  • Dennis Parker Jr. led the scoring efforts early and often, finishing with 23 points and six boards.
  • Del Jones tied his career high in points with 22, his second of three games this season with 20+ points.
  • Foul trouble defined the game for both sides sending pivotal players to the bench, but North Carolina pulled ahead with 49 total shots from the charity stripe.
  • Despite the size mismatch, Radford tied North Carolina for paint points at 30 each.

PLAY BY PLAY
The Highlanders jumped out early against the Tar Heels as Parker Jr. got the free throws going early while Jones scored a layup for the 4-2 lead. North Carolina used a big run to jump back ahead. Down 14-6, Radford rallied with a 10-2 run behind Parker Jr. and Jaylon Johnson coming alive for a combined nine points.

Parker Jr. put an exclamation point on the run, nailing a three that had Radford up 19-16. A driving make from Walls put Radford back ahead 21-20, but a scoring drought that lasted over four minutes gave the Tar Heels a big advantage they'd never relinquish. The hosts would score eight unanswered before Parker Jr. broke the run pushing his first half point total to 13.

Coming out of halftime, Radford trailed 44-31 and got a quick steal and bucket from Johnson. Jones would come alive scoring a flurry of points, but free throws and quick points in the paint helped North Carolina keep their commanding lead.

A three pointer by Louie Jordan plus an and-one would pull Radford as close as 46-58 with 14 minutes to play. North Carolina went back ahead from 20+ down the stretch, but in the closing minutes Radford would close the gap thanks to a three from Mari Jordan and more makes from the free throw line by Jones. At final whistle, Radford fell in the 89-74 final.
