Parker Jr. and Jones Combine for 54 as Highlanders Come Up Short to Seahawks

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford men's basketball program came up short at home against a tough foe Friday night, as UNC Wilmington used a big second half showing to pull away in an eventual 81-73 finish.

KEY STATS
  • Del Jones and Dennis Parker Jr. continue to score at an elite level for the Highlanders, combining for 54 of Radford's 73 points.
  • The duo was also behind Radford's resurgence from three, as Jones and Parker Jr. combined for nine makes from deep including a career-high six from Parker Jr.
  • Radford also had their best free throw shooting showing of the season, hitting 15 of 19 tries from the line.
  • UNC Wilmington was dominant in the paint, outscoring Radford 40-20 and 14-7 in second chance opportunities. The rebounding margin also ended in the Seahawks favor 38-25.

PLAY BY PLAY
Jones got Radford's night going with an easy make early, but the Seahawks took a lead they'd never relinquish with a quick 7-0 run. Parker Jr. would also open his scoring with a three, but the team was suddenly down 15-5 as the Seahawks worked efficiently.

Radford would look to claw back throughout the first half and did it from three-point range. Louie Jordan, Parker Jr., Jones and Brennan Rigsby Jr. all provided the deep shots. A layup by Mari Jordan pulled Radford closer at 24-21 but another 6-0 run by UNC Wilmington reestablished their lead. Parker Jr. tried to cut into that advantage with back-to-back threes to close the half, but it was the visiting Seahawks who remained up at 31-27.

Parker Jr. just kept hitting to open the second, scoring another three that pulled Radford even closer at 32-30. An and-one by Jones had the Highlanders close again, but the team just wasn't able to get over the hump. A three-minute drought without a make from the field allowed the Seahawks to pulled back ahead 45-36.

The run continued out of a media timeout as the Seahawks scored eight unanswered to blow their lead up to 53-38. Radford kept firing from three as Rigsby Jr. and Parker Jr. connected again. Radford now trailed just 62-51 with eight to play and was still trying to mount the comeback.

UNC Wilmington would continue to build their back up, though, leading by as much as 19 with three minutes to play. Radford attempted one last rally over the final minutes as Jones exploded for 13 points over the final two minutes. The Highlanders would ultimately come up short as the Seahawks held on to win 81-73.
