CLINTON, S.C. – The Radford volleyball program was locked in an intense road battle all Saturday afternoon at Presbyterian and used a gutsy performance late to pull out the 3-2 victory.

  • Radford served up nine aces which played a large role in multiple runs. Jackeline Nerro led the effort with four aces.
  • Miranda Howard led the team with 22 digs while Ryno collected 15 for an impressive double-double stat line.

  • Radford has clinched back-to-back seasons with a Big South Tournament appearance since the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

PLAY BY PLAY
While Radford looked to find their footing in Saturday's road battle, the team took a big lead early to help seal and opening set decision. Katrina Miller and Olivia Ryno set the tone with four kills each, with four of those eight kills coming early to give Radford a big 13-5 advantage. Radford's attack continued behind Taryn Roberts and Aubrey Hatch to push things further to 16-7.

The Blue Hose rallied back, though, scoring seven of the next points to tighten the set at 17-14. The run continued, cutting Radford's lead to as slim as 21-19. Out of a timeout, Radford was able to put the set away as Roberts and Miller both tallied kills to earn the 25-21 set one win.

The second set flipped results from the two squads as this time it was Presbyterian who built a big early lead. A consistent stretch of blocks and kills fueled a long Presbyterian run that ended in a 17-9 advantage. Radford regrouped and took advantage of some miscues to sneak back into the match with a 7-1 run.

Now only down 18-16, Presbyterian was forced to call a timeout. The Blue Hose retook a 23-17 lead on a 5-1 run and seemed to have the set put away for good. Radford dug deep again and got kills from Roberts and Miller to tighten the set back at 24-23. The Blue Hose escaped, though, winning set two 25-23.

Radford would rebound in set three back to a more dominant form. Alana Kolb and Aubrey Hatch began the set with kills and a 4-0 run with a kill from Roberts and ace from Jackeline Nerro had Radford ahead 6-2. A block by Kolb and kills from Roberts, Hatch and Ryno fueled a 5-1 run that had Radford up 16-9.

Like the sets before it, this one wouldn't come easy either. Presbyterian rattled off four unanswered to tighten the set. Up late 22-19, Radford was able to take back the lead in the match thanks to a pair of errors by Presbyterian and a kill from Hatch earning set three 25-20.

The match would seesaw back in Presbyterian's favor in set four as the Blue Hose jumped out to a 6-2 early advantage. Radford battled back as Ryno and Roberts tallied kills. Down 17-11, Radford erupted for a 5-0 run to pull right back into the set behind two more aces from Nerro. Radford and Presbyterian traded points the rest of the way as Radford wasn't quite able to complete the comeback in the set falling 25-23 forcing a winner-takes-all.

Shaping up for an exciting finish, the fifth set was no different as both teams were locked in a close battle. Radford went up 2-0 early but a 3-1 run by Presbyterian quickly tied things back up. A block by Sloss and Roberts tied the set back up at 5-5 as both squads would trade points all the way up to 11-11.

Presbyterian seemed to take the first major lead at 13-11, but a timely timeout allowed Radford to regroup and come back strong. An ace by Miranda Howard tied the match at 13-13. Ryno and Roberts would combine for two kills through two Presbyterian timeouts to give Radford the fifth set 15-13 and the match 3-2. The victory ensures a spot in the Big South Tournament for Radford, with one match still to play next week.
