CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Radford freshman Jaelynn Joiner was named the Big South Women's Track & Field Freshman of the Week after her collegiate debut at the Liberty Kickoff last week.
Joiner started the event off with a bang, finishing fourth overall in the long jump with a leap of 5.90 meters (19'4.5"). It was the second-best performance in Radford history and the eighth-best in the Big South. The Richmond, Va. native also contributed to Radford's win in the 4x400 meter relay, running the second leg with a near-record breaking time of 3:49.60, putting the group second on Radford's all-time performance list.
In addition to those two events, Joiner's 40.98 in the 300-meter dash placed her sixth on another all-time performance list.
Joiner is the first Radford athlete to win freshman of the week during the first week of Big South awards. She's the fifth Radford women's track and field athlete to win freshman of the week, joining Elyssia Fisher (2023), Raichelle Cornelius (2023), Jeylah Hamrick (2024), and Sienna Bailey (2024).
After a holiday break, the Highlanders will have a host of competitions through January and February. The run begins at the Tryon Collegiate in Mill Spring, N.C., from January 16-17, at a brand-new indoor facility hosted by Tryon International.
