Valiant Effort Late Not Enough as Men’s Basketball Falls to Southern Miss

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford men's basketball program put forth a valiant comeback effort late in Wednesday night's meeting with Southern Miss, but ultimately came up short in the 82-75 final.

KEY STATS
  • After attempting 19 free throws in the first half, Radford was held to just eight the rest of the way. Comparatively, Southern Miss went to the free throw often late with 24 second half attempts.
  • Tyson Brown finished with a season and team high 19 points thanks to an efficient 7-9 shooting performance. Brown also found success at the free throw line with five makes.
  • Jaylon Johnson, Dennis Parker Jr. and Del Jones would all also finish in double figures scoring thanks to the late rally.
  • After making just one three in the first half, Radford hit nine in the second including seven over the final seven minutes.

PLAY BY PLAY
Wednesday night's affair was a slog out the gates for both squads as made shots weren't easy to come by. A three from Parker Jr. had Radford ahead early while back-to-back layups from Brown got his big night started. Radford would go scoreless for three minutes allowing Southern Miss to break away for their first big lead at 18-7.

Radford was able to claw back, however, thanks in part to the free throw line. Brown scored four straight, including two free throws while Jones, Brennan Rigsby Jr., Erichsen and Parker Jr. all made shots from the charity stripe. Suddenly, a layup by Jones had vaulted Radford back ahead 20-18. Both teams traded baskets the rest of the way as Southern Miss held the slim 31-29 lead at half.

Out of the locker room, it was all Southern Miss who charged through two different Radford timeouts to balloon their lead back a wide margin. 11 unanswered made it a 42-29 deficit, with that run being broken by a three from Johnson.

That sparked the Highlanders' offense and defense, as miscues plagued the Golden Eagles allowing Radford to claw back for the first time in the second half. Another three from Johnson plus layups from Erichsen and Parker Jr. had Radford back to down just 52-45 with 11:08 to play.

Southern Miss struck back out of a timeout, but Radford refused to go away. Back-to-back threes from Jones and Johnson had Radford within five at 59-54 with 6:15 to play. A 6-0 run briefly reextended Southern Miss' lead, but once again it was Johnson hitting consecutive three pointers to keep hopes alive.

A couple of good looks rimmed out for the Highlanders with just over a minute to go forcing the team to send Southern Miss to the free throw line. The Golden Eagles were elite all night and made the comeback no easy effort for the Highlanders. Radford got within a possession at 78-75 but wasn't quite able to close things out in the end as Southern Miss escaped with the 82-75 final.
