Women’s Tennis Cruises to Win in Opening Match of Spring Season

FAIRFAX, Va. – The Radford women's tennis program looked strong in their first match of the season picking up a dominant 6-1 victory over George Mason.
To begin the strong evening match, Radford was able to clinch the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. On the top flight, the duo of Julia Abrams and Lexi Smolder won their spring debut with ease 6-2. On court three, Michaela Stephens and Brooke Murphy sealed the 1-0 lead with a 6-4 win.
In singles play, the wins kept rolling in. On court one, Stephens looked strong, winning 6-4, 6-1. Smolder was also dominant in her match on court three winning 6-2, 6-0. Brooke Murphy also helped Radford gain the three points needed to clinch, winning 6-2, 6-2 on court five.
Abrams bounced back from a first set tiebreaker to win the back two sets 6(1)-7, 6-2, 1-0(4). Rachel Ekanem picked up her first win of the season on court six, sealing the 6-1 final for the Highlanders.
Radford will return to action in one week as they stick to the road. On Saturday, February 8th, Radford visits Liberty for an 11 a.m. start.
