Softball Splits Final Day at the Pirate Clash

GREENVILLE, N.C. –The Radford softball program split their final day at the Pirate Clash Saturday taking down UMBC in a dominant 6-0 finish before falling to #22 Boston 7-1.

GAME ONE
The Highlanders first game of the day was smooth sailing thanks to a great outing from Natalie Jones backed up by a solid offensive performance. UMBC would get two runners on early in the first, but Jones shut it down to keep things scoreless.

Radford got on the board first in the second, working with two outs. Amber Wolfe drew a walk and after advancing by a wild pitch, crossed home thanks to a double from Emily Smith. Now up 1-0, Jones began to cruise with two strikeouts to retire the side in the bottom of the inning.

The top of Radford's order stayed hot in the third as Amanda Lee singled and Cassi Barbato doubled to set up another scoring opportunity. A groundout by Rachel Smith was good enough to score Lee on third, putting Radford ahead 2-0.

After a quiet fourth that included another pair of strikeouts from Jones, the Highlanders continued to add in the fifth. After Grace Bechtol drew a walk, she advanced all the way to third on a stolen base and wild pitch. Barbato had the RBI swing this time with a sacrifice fly that made it a 3-0 game.

Jones continued to cruise for the Highlanders, tossing perfect fifth and sixth innings allowing Radford to add some insurance in the final inning. Bechtol continued her big game with a double to lead off the seventh and promptly stole third. An Amanda Lee double scored Bechtol and with the bases loaded Kelley Feigen would score two more with a double pushing Radford's lead to 6-0.

With an ample lead, the rest was easy for Jones to put a bow on the Highlanders first shutout of the season in the final frame securing the 6-0 victory. The win also marked Radford's third straight, marking the first time Radford has won three straight games away from home since a road series sweep of Gardner-Webb during the 2021 season.

GAME TWO
Facing a ranked opponent in #22 Boston in the second game of the day, the Highlanders fell after a slow start gave the Terriers the early lead. Boston was able to score two off a home run in the first and followed it up with five more unanswered runs to make it a 7-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, Radford got its lone run in the game thanks to Rachel Smith who collected Radford's first home run of the young season. Dakota Redmon and Madison Sabo would combine for five innings of four run work over the closing innings, but Boston held on for the 7-1 finish.

UP NEXT
Radford will be back in action for their next weekend tournament when they travel to Lynchburg, Va. for the Liberty Invitational next weekend. Action begins on Friday, February 21st with a doubleheader against Saint Joseph's starting at 4 p.m.
