Softball Battles Hard on Final Day of Liberty Invite

LYNCHBURG, Va. –The Radford softball program fell in a pair of tight games Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Liberty Invite, falling to Saint Joseph's 10-8 and to the hosts #25 Liberty 3-2.

GAME ONE
Despite an offensive outburst in game one, early miscues would prove too much to overcome in Radford's first game of the day. Saint Joseph's began the game with four straight hits to build a 2-0 lead through one inning.

In the second, Radford would strike back for their first run. Amber Wolfe led off the inning with a single and was replaced on the bases by Dakota Redmon after a fielders choice. After a walk and flyout moved her to third, Isabel Harrison stayed hot with an RBI single to make it a 2-1 game.

In the second, Saint Joseph's added three runs while only recording one hit. Pitching struggles allowed two hit by pitches and three walks with two outs to put the Hawks ahead 5-1. In the third, a costly error would allow two more to score and push the deficit further to 8-1.

After a scoreless fourth steadied things, Radford's offense broke out in the fifth. Amanda Lee singled and stole second to start the rally while Cassi Barbato drew a walk. Kelley Feigen added an RBI hit followed by a big three-run homer by Rachel Smith to put the deficit to just 8-5.

The Hawks added another pair of runs with two outs in the sixth to go back up 10-5. Not giving in, Radford crossed another run in the sixth thanks to a two-out RBI by Lee that scored Grace Bechtol.

Josie Driggers made her season debut in the bottom of the sixth in the circle and worked through some baserunners to keep the game at 10-6. Radford got a triple from R. Smith to get things started in the seventh followed by an RBI hit from Abby Bossler. Emily Smith followed Bossler with a double making it a 10-8 game, but the rally would end there just short for the 10-8 final.

GAME TWO
The Highlanders shrugged off the result of the first game and came out swinging against the weekend hosts and ranked Liberty. Redmon got the start and worked around an early walk to toss a scoreless first.

In the second, Kelley Feigen started a hit train for Radford  as she was quickly followed by Bossler and E. Smith who also earned hits to load the bases. Bechtol put the ball in play hard resulting in an error that scored the first run of the game. An infield hit by Harrison gave Radford a second run to lead 2-0.

Liberty would strike for a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to retie the game at two-all. In the bottom of the third, Redmon worked around a pair of walks to retire the Flames and put a zero back on the scoreboard.

After a scoreless offensive half of the fourth, Liberty would strike with two outs to take a slim 3-2 lead. A big double play in the bottom of the fifth kept things a one run game as Radford's offense continued to look for the response. Bossler and Amber Wolfe would get on base with two outs in the sixth, but the Highlanders weren't able to score keeping it a 3-2 game.

The first two Flames would each reach base to start the seventh, but Redmon didn't fret getting three straight outs to eliminate the scoring threat. Radford would get one last crack at it to try and tie or lead in the seventh, but the top of the order went down in order to seal the 3-2 final.
