Softball Back in Win Column with Split of Action at Hokie Invite

SALEM, Va. –The Radford softball program got back into the win column Saturday afternoon splitting their two games with Bucknell and Villanova, picking up a win in the later game 7-3 over the Wildcats.

GAME ONE
The Highlanders began the day with a rematch against Bucknell, but a bad inning spelled doom for the eventual lopsided score. Radford did get off to a better start in round two, as starting pitcher Dakota Redmon kept the Bison scoreless through the first two innings.

The Highlanders offense couldn't get going through the opening innings, allowing Bucknell to strike for the lead in the third. Going up 4-0, doing all the damage with two outs, Radford got a hit from Grace Hogie to try and get back into the game in the bottom of the third.

Hogie was stranded at second after a stolen base and the offense would go away quietly in the fourth. Bucknell struck for five runs in the fifth to push their lead further to 9-0, forcing Radford to score two or more runs in the bottom half to keep the game alive.

Abby Bossler started the inning with a double followed by an infield hit from Amber Wolfe. A groundout moved the pair up a base and it was Jada Holt who picked up the RBI hit to score Bossler. That was all for the Highlanders' offense however, as the game would go final 9-1.

GAME TWO
Looking to snap the losing skid, the task didn't get any easier in the defending Big East champions Villanova up next. Radford stood tall to the task, though, to get back in the win column.

Morgan Cooper earned the start for Radford and tossed a strong seven innings to right the ship. Cooper dialed up two scoreless innings to start the game while the offense spread out some hits but was still looking for the big RBI strike.

In the third, Villanova plated two off a home run to go ahead 2-0. After a scoreless fourth, the dam finally broke for Radford's offense in the fifth. Grace Bechtol, Isabel Harrison and Cassi Barbato all singled to start the inning with Barbato's hit giving Radford its first run.

A Rachel Smith walk loaded the bases, but the Highlanders were down to their last out in the inning. Wolfe drew a walk that scored a run, and Hogie would provide the big strike as she doubled home two runs and put Radford ahead 4-2. Jada Holt also provided a big moment for insurance runs, doubling home two more runs to give Radford the 6-2 advantage.

Cooper responded with a clean bottom of the fifth allowing Radford to cruise into the sixth. Amanda Lee would single, steal second, move to third on a Barbato single, and scored off a groundout to provide Radford further insurance up 7-2. The Wildcats would strike for one more run in the seventh, but Cooper shut things down to help Radford earn the 7-3 victory.
