Baseball falls in mid-week clash at Elon

ELON, N.C. – Still off to one of its best starts in recent years, the Radford baseball program suffered a 10-1 setback at the hands of Elon in a non-conference, mid-week battle at Latham Park on Tuesday afternoon.
 
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Radford – 1, Elon – 10
LOCATION: Latham Park (Elon, North Carolina)
RECORDS: Radford 7-8 (0-0), Elon 7-10 (0-0)
 
THE BREAKDOWN
- The Highlanders ran into a hot pitching staff and were able to record just three hits on the afternoon.
- Zach Paczewski drove in a run off a 1-for-3 day at the plate.
- Brady Whitacre also finished with a base knock (1-for-2) and came around to score once in the contest.
- James Ward posted the other Radford hit on a 1-for-4 effort.
- Whitacre, Jhonkeanu Perez, Noah Toole and Corbin Grantham all drew a single walk.
- Trey Way fired two scoreless innings of relief. He worked around four walks and did not allow a single hit.
- Clay Clatterbaugh and Will Rice both chipped in a scoreless 0.1 innings out of the pen.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Elon struck right away with a run in the top of the first to jump out to a 1-0 lead.
- Radford responded right back in the top of the second as Paczewski drove a ball to center to plate Whitacre to knot things at 1-1.
- The game turned into a pitcher's duel through the next 3.5 innings. The Highlanders allowed just one hit and one run (unearned) while the Phoenix matched it with just one hit and zero runs allowed. Elon pushed its run across in the bottom of the fifth to retake the 2-1 advantage.
- The Phoenix went on to add two runs in both the bottom of the sixth and seventh to extend their advantage to 6-1.
- Elon was able to chip across four more runs in the eighth to close out the 10-1 victory.
 
NEXT UP
Radford will get Big South Conference play underway as the Highlanders hit the road for a showdown against USC Upstate, set for Friday, March 14 through Sunday, March 16 at Harley Park. The entire series will be played in front of a national audience on ESPN+.
