Cheney Stays Hot as Radford Drops Match to Akron

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's lacrosse program hung close with Akron before falling late in the eventual 18-10 final led by Mady Cheney's second straight game with five goals.

KEY STATS
  • Cheney's five goals led Radford's offensive efforts and was her third game with 3+ goals this season.
  • Ava LaManna recorded 16 saves in the net for Radford, her second highest total this season.
  • Radford conceded just two free position attempts in the game while drawing eight of their own.
  • Evie Gee also finished with a hat trick, her second 3+ goal performance this season.

PLAY BY PLAY
After Akron opened the match on a 4-0 scoring run, Radford held strong and responded with a 4-1 run of their own to tighten up the game. Gee began the scoring with two straight goals, the opening goal assisted by Piper Galbraith. Cheney chimed in for the third straight Radford goal that made it a 4-3 game.

After the Zips added a goal, Gee scored her third goal of the quarter before time ran out to keep it a 5-4 game through 15 minutes. The second half saw one of Radford's best defensive performances so far this season allowing just a pair of goals to the Zips offense. Cheney provided Radford's lone goal of the quarter in a man-up opportunity, as Radford only trailed 7-5 at halftime.

Akron would open the second half on a 2-0 run before being broken up by Alyssa Yost who scored her 12th goal of the season. Akron would score eight of the next ten goals, however, to build a lead that would prove insurmountable.

Maddie Abbott would score her second goal of the season while Radford's final three scores would all come from Cheney. At the final horn, Akron had pulled away for the 18-10 final.
