Feigen’s Clutch Hit Sends Softball Past USC Upstate in Series Opener

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball program bounced back late in a big way Friday afternoon thanks to a wonderful piece of hitting from Kelley Feigen that drove in the winning run for the 3-2 final.

KEY STATS
  • With another complete game effort tonight, Redmon's total innings on the season sit at 99.2, one out away from the 100 mark.
  • Feigen's walk-off RBI was her 11th run batted in this season, one of six Highlanders with 10+ RBI.
  • The walkoff victory is the first for the Highlanders this season to go along with a trio of extra inning wins on the road.
  • Lee's two-out RBI was her sixth such RBI this season, tied for second most on the team.
  • The 4-0 start to Big South play is Radford's best start to conference play since the 2012 season when the team started 4-1. Radford's longest win streak to start conference play is five, set in 2009 and 2010.

PLAY BY PLAY
Looking to defend the home field for the fourth time this season, Radford got a great start from Dakota Redmon to help the cause. Redmon would work a 1-2-3 first inning including two strikeouts to get her day started right. Her offense responded in kind with the first run of the day in the bottom half.

Amanda Lee worked a full count before roping a single to right, advancing to third thanks to an Isabel Harrison double that just escaped the third baseman's glove. After Rachel Smith walked, Cassi Barbato ensured a run would come in with her sacrifice fly for the 1-0 lead.

Redmon would work around a runner in scoring position in the second to keep the lead while Radford added another run in the second. A throwing error allowed Grace Bechtol to sit at second with none out. The next two Highlanders were retired, but Lee stepped up big for a two-out RBI single that pushed Radford's lead to 2-0.

Both pitchers would settle in from here as neither team was able to put together a solid scoring threat. Kelley Feigen caught a runner stealing to help seal a scoreless third. Redmon dialed up five groundouts over the fourth and fifth innings to keep the lead at 2-0.

In the sixth, USC Upstate was finally able to strike. A leadoff walk would reach third after the following batters would reach base to load the bases. While Redmon worked a big fielder's choice, the Spartans struck with an RBI single for their first run. A wild pitch allowed the game to tie up and put runners on second and third with one out.

Redmon would regain composure to keep the game tied. Redmon first earned a big strikeout before inducing another groundout to keep it a 2-2 ballgame. Radford's offense would put a runner on second with one out in the bottom of the sixth, but the scoring threat fizzled out to keep things locked up.

After Redmon worked a dominant seventh to steady the ship, Radford got an incredible effort from the bottom of its lineup. Bechtol led off the inning with a single and chose a perfect pitch to easily steal second on. Feigen sealed the deal, going the opposite way with a single through the right side that scored Bechtol and won the game for Radford 3-2.
