Radford Earns Win Over Fordham, Falls to James Madison Sunday

HARRISONBURG, Va. –The Radford softball program split their final day of action in Harrisonburg Sunday afternoon defeating Fordham 7-3 before falling to James Madison 4-12.

GAME ONE
Rematching Fordham after an eight-inning win earlier this weekend, Radford leaned on starting pitcher Dakota Redmon who tossed another solid seven innings of work. The Highlanders' offense wouldn't wait long to get going, scoring a pair of runs in the opening inning.

With two outs, Cassi Barbato drew a walk setting up Rachel Smith to triple her home. Isabel Harrison singled home Smith making it a 2-0 Radford lead early. The freshman Redmon was efficient early, retiring the first seven straight batters she faced in the game to preserve Radford's lead through three innings.

Radford got a pair of hits from Smith and Abby Bossler and the fourth but came up empty after a double play. Redmon got back to work with a 1-2-3 bottom of the fourth as Radford tried to add on more in the fifth.

An error and single saw the first two Highlanders reach base in the fifth, but three straight outs stifled the rally. In the sixth, the Highlanders broke through again for some pivotal scoring. After Smith opened the inning reaching by error, Harrison replaced her on the bases after a fielder's choice and stole second.

Bossler would single and advance to second to put two runners in scoring position. Amber Wolfe picked up the first RBI of the inning with a sacrifice fly. An infield hit by Kelley Feigen and single to left by Grace Bechtol would load the bases. Amanda Lee would earn an infield hit with an RBI to make it 4-0 Radford followed by Grace Hogie who singled home two more runs for the 6-0 advantage.

Those runs would prove big as in the bottom of the sixth Fordham would tag on three runs to tighten the game at 6-3. Fighting back, Radford got a two-out RBI from Wolfe who singled home Bossler to push the lead back to 7-3. Redmon took care of the rest, tossing a scoreless bottom of the inning to seal the 7-3 final.

GAME TWO
A pair of trouble innings would hurt the Highlanders and be too much to overcome in Sunday's second game. Early on, however, it was Radford who would strike first after a pair of scoreless innings thrown by Morgan Cooper.

In the third inning, Grace Bechtol opened the scoring by crushing the first home run of her collegiate career over the left field fence for the 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the third, the Dukes responded for five runs to go up 5-1.

Radford battled back in the fourth as the first three Highlanders reached base. Barbato was hit by a pitch, Smith singled and Harrison singled to load the bases. Bossler brought two runners home with a single to center and would cross home herself after a single from Kelley Feigen as Radford trailed just 5-4.

James Madison responded again with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, three runs in the fifth, and the final two runs of the game in the sixth to pull the game to a close at a 12-4 finish.
