Redmon’s Shutout Highlights Doubleheader Split with Longwood

RADFORD, Va. –The Radford softball program split their doubleheader Saturday with Longwood with a dominant 8-0 shutout in game one followed by a tight 3-1 loss in the second game.

KEY STATS
  • Redmon tied her career high for strikeouts with 10 in game one, earning the one-hit shutout over six innings.
  • Amanda Lee led the offense with three hits and two RBI over the two games.
  • Radford has now opened their Big South series with a win in four straight tries.
  • Radford's offense drew five walks in game one but only drew one in the second game, with the one walk representing their lone run.
  • Longwood used the long ball in game two, using the only two home runs of the day to score all three runs.

GAME ONE
Redmon got the Highlanders started in the first game of the day and was dominant throughout. The freshman struck out the side in the first and used a double play in the second to keep the Lancers scoreless early.

Radford would strike for a trio of runs thanks to an error in the second. Grace Bechtol doubled to begin the rally while Abby Bossler drew a walk to put two on. With two outs, Emily Smith put the ball in play and benefited from a throwing error that allowed Bechtol and Bossler to score. Smith kept sprinting around the bases, and her aggression was rewarded as the Lancers committed another error that allowed her to make it a 3-0 game.

Longwood would get their first scoring opportunity in the third putting two on, but Redmon erased it quickly with another three strikeouts. A sacrifice fly by Bechtol would add to Redmon's cause in the bottom of the third, putting Radford ahead 4-0.

Three straight outs by the Lancers put the offense right back out in the fourth, but the Highlanders settled with just an infield single from Lee. Redmon kept the shutout intact with another pair of strikeouts in the fifth allowing the offense to strike once again.

Rachel Smith began the bottom of the fifth with a single as Cassi Barbato doubled to put both in scoring position. An infield hit by Kelley Feigen drove Smith home for the 5-0 lead. Another sacrifice fly by Bechtol would push Barbato home as Radford took the commanding 6-0 advantage.

The offense would keep cruising in the sixth for the eventual run-rule win. A throwing error put E. Smith on second as Lee doubled her home. With the bases loaded, Feigen added another RBI with a sacrifice fly that walked off the game in the 8-0 final.

GAME TWO
While the Highlanders offense continued to square up the ball in game two, Longwood's defense made multiple solid plays to keep Radford's offense contained. Morgan Cooper got the starting nod and was dominant through the early stretch.

Cooper would retire the first ten batters she faced which allowed the offense to take a brief lead in the third. Bossler drew a walk and was able to move to second thanks to a sacrifice bunt from E. Smith. Lee came up clutch with the two-out double that gave Radford the 1-0 advantage.

The Lancers would get a pair of big swings in the fourth, however, hitting two home runs that scored three runs accounting for all their offense in the doubleheader. Cooper was able to settle back in and keep the deficit at two the rest of the way.

The Highlanders offensive aggression allowed the opposing starting pitcher to work efficiently. The final 13 batters of the game were all retired in order, without a strikeout, as Longwood was able to hold on in the 3-1 finish.
