Highlanders Power Past Blue Hose for Series Sweep

CLINTON, S.C. –The Radford softball program won both ends of their doubleheader at Presbyterian Saturday taking game one 10-0 and the second contest 3-2.

KEY STATS
  • Emily Smith's four RBI in game one were a season high as the senior also scored two runs to account for 6 of Radford's 10 runs.
  • Morgan Cooper's winning decision was her 10th of the season, joining Dakota Redmon with a 10+ win season.
  • Despite the increased traffic on the bases, Radford stranded just six total runners across the two games played.
  • The series sweep is Radford's second of the conference schedule, also sweeping Gardner-Webb.
  • The Highlanders won every conference series on their schedule for the first time since the 2012 campaign.

GAME ONE
Radford went for their sixth straight Big South series victory in game one of the doubleheader and used an offensive outburst to do so. After Morgan Cooper dialed up a clean first inning, the offense was able to strike for five runs in the second.

The first three batters of the second would all reach for Radford thanks to walks from Cassi Barbato and Isabel Harrison as well as a single from Kelley Feigen. An RBI groundout by Grace Hogie would put Radford ahead 1-0. With two outs, Emily Smith would lace a triple to right that scored two more.

Grace Bechtol would keep the two-out rally rolling with a double to left center that scored Smith. Capping the inning was Amanda Lee driving in one more off a sacrifice bunt that put Radford ahead 5-0. Cooper would earn another clean inning in the second thanks to a double play to keep the game at 5-0.

Radford's offense would keep slugging in the third. Feigen would collect another hit while Hogie walked to put two on. A single by Abby Bossler would score Taylor Higgins, who pinch ran for Feigen. Another big hit came off the bat of E. Smith who doubled in two runs to go up 8-0.

After Bechtol drew a walk, Lee would single in another run to push the lead to 9-0. Radford would execute a double steal to score the final run of the frame and push ahead 10-0. A pair of hits would be all that represented Presbyterian's offense the rest of the way. Cooper would force another double play in the fifth to end the game in a run-rule 10-0.

GAME TWO
Abby Peace earned the start in game two and was excellent going the distance to lead Radford in the tight win. In the opening inning, Radford would get an early lead thanks to timely hitting. Bechtol would begin the game with a single and swipe second base. After a wild pitch, R. Smith put Radford ahead with a sacrifice fly.

The Blue Hose would strike for a lone run of their own in the bottom of the first. Tied 1-1, Presbyterian would threaten again in the second before Peace used three strikeouts to escape the jam.

With two outs in the third, Lee was able to pick up a clutch two-out RBI singling home Bossler to renew the lead at 2-1. Peace would take over from there, dominating in the circle to retire eight straight batters. In the top of the sixth, Radford added a crucial run to their lead thanks in part to R. Smith's fifth triple of the season. An RBI groundout by Barbato put Radford up 3-1.

Presbyterian would strike for a run in the bottom of the sixth to tighten the game back up at 3-2. Peace would strand the tying run on third and then work through a walk in the seventh to tie a bow on her complete game effort and push Radford past Presbyterian 3-2, completing the series sweep.
