Baseball falls in Sunday doubleheader at Duke

DURHAM, N.C. – The Radford baseball program suffered a setback with two road loses to ACC power Duke in a doubleheader inside Jack Coombs Field on Sunday afternoon.
 
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE (GAME ONE): Radford – 0, Duke – 15
FINAL SCORE (GAME TWO): Radford – 5, Duke – 17
LOCATION: Jack Coombs Field (Durham, North Carolina)
RECORDS: Radford 24-23 (10-8 Big South), Duke 32-15 (14-10 ACC)
 
GAME ONE BREAKDOWN
- Tyler Sparrer posted the only Highlander hit in the opener.
- James Ward also drew a walk.
- It was all Duke in this one as the Blue Devils dropped five runs in the bottom of the third, another five in the fourth, three in the fifth and two more in the sixth to seal the 15-0, run-rule victory.
 
GAME TWO BREAKDOWN
- James Ward paced the offense in game No. 2 with a 1-for-3 effort. His outing included one home run, a team-best two runs batted in and one run scored to go with a base on balls.
- Brady Powell (2-for-4) and Breckin Nace (1-for-3, one run, one walk) also chipped in a RBI, respectively.
- Hunter Keen (1-for-4), Matthew McGovern (1-for-1) and Corbin Grantham (1-for-3) all came around to score a single time.
- Radford showed more fight in the second game and took an early lead as Ward sent a two-run shot over the left field fence in the top of the first to give the Highlanders an early 2-0 edge.
- Duke responded with four runs in the bottom of the second to jump ahead 4-2.
- Nace sent a shot right up the middle for a RBI in the top of the third to get Radford back in it at 4-3.
- It was all Blue Devils from that point on with four runs in the third, one in the fourth, three in the fifth and another five in the sixth to take a commanding 17-3 advantage.
- Radford was able to push across two runs in the top of the seventh, but by then the damage was done as Duke posted two run-rule wins in a row over the Highlanders.
 
NEXT UP
The Highlanders return to the New River City for their final home series of the season as Radford hosts Winthrop for a Big South series that gets underway on Friday, May 9. First pitch is set for 6 PM ET from Sherman Carter Memorial Stadium and admission is free of charge. The conference clash will also be played in front of a national audience on ESPN+.
