Highlanders Late Rally Stifled in Highlander Invitational Finale

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford volleyball program came up short despite a late comeback Saturday afternoon, falling 3-1 to Marshall in the final game of the Highlander Invitational.

KEY STATS
  • Olivia Ryno had her first breakout performance with 16 kills, more than any other player in the match and a single-game high in her young career.
  • Radford's 44 total kills were a match high for the weekend, but Marshall's 16 errors were also an opponent low for the weekend.
  • Aubrey Hatch tallied nine kills, totaling 17 over two matches played this weekend.
  • Miranda Howard's 19 digs were the most she recorded this weekend, as she finished in double digit figures in all three matches played.
  • Radford out-blocked Marshall 8-7, sealing a weekend where they out-blocked all their opponents.

PLAY BY PLAY
Saturday's match got off to a rough start for the Highlanders who would need to climb out of an early hole as The Herd began set one on a 6-0 run. A service error and block by Taryn Roberts and Katrina Miller halted the run, but Radford couldn't string together any consistent runs early to make up the deficit.

Kills by Miller and Hatch helped Radford go point for point midway through the set, but Marshall's early run proved big as they still led 15-8. Scoring seven of the last night points in the set, Marshall was able to hold on 25-13 in the opener to go ahead 1-0.

After some attack errors to start the second set, a kill by Ryno helped Radford right the ship early tied 3-3. Kolb would add a block and kill while two mishaps by Marshall retied the set at 9-9. Thanks to three straight kills by Ryno, Hatch and Roberts Radford gained its first edge of the evening at 12-10.

Marshall would go on a 5-1 run to reclaim a lead as Radford leaned on kills from Sierra Moore and Hatch to keep the deficit within reach. Another 3-0 run allowed Marshall to pull ahead further, though, as an ace from Moore, kill by Ryno and two kills from Roberts down the stretch weren't enough to overcome Marshall's attack that took the second set 25-20.

Down 8-2 early in the third set, Radford needed a timeout to try and stay alive in the match. After the regroup, Radford went on its longest run of the day to take their biggest lead of the day. Four mishaps from Marshall combined with kills from Moore and Smolenska helped Radford charge back to lead 11-9.

Hatch, Robert and Moore would all go back-to-back with kills to keep the Highlanders rolling. Another ace by Moore and two kills from Ryno fueled another big 6-1 run by Radford to lead even further 20-12. Ryno stayed hot with two more kills while Hatch finished things off with a kill to keep the match alive with a 25-16 win in set three.

Trading points throughout the early parts of the fourth set, Marshall got one more big run to put things out of reach. Thanks to a 7-1 run, Marshall would double up Radford 14-7. The hole proved to be too much, as the set slipped away 25-15 in and Marshall took the match 3-1.
