Strong Victory Over Tennessee Tech Highlights Friday Action at Golden Eagle Invitational

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Radford volleyball program split their matches Friday afternoon at the Golden Eagle Invitational, taking a dominant win over Tennessee Tech 3-0 before falling to Samford 3-0.

KEY STATS
  • Aubrey Hatch (11) and Taryn Roberts (10) both recorded double digit kills against Tennessee Tech, Radford's first match this season with two players in double figures kills.
  • Radford's .444 hitting percentage against the Golden Eagles was their highest hitting percentage in a match since August 27th, 2016, against Norfolk State. The clip ranks fourth best in a single match in program history.
  • After recording 12 blocks today, Radford has now out-blocked opponents 65-51 this season.

GAME ONE
The Highlanders got off to an electric start in their first match of the day and stayed hot throughout for the eventual dominant win. Bursting out to an 8-3 advantage, Radford got kills from Roberts, Rylee Sloss, Hatch and Katrina Miller to get their offense going.

The Golden Eagles tightened the set to just a 10-9 Radford advantage, but Radford responded with a 4-1 run behind some solid serving from Sierra Moore. The Highlanders kept stringing together runs behind solid early showings from Roberts and Hatch who combined for eight kills by the set's end. Radford ended the set on a 3-0 run and pulled away 25-18 to take the 1-0 lead in the match.

Early in the second set, Radford would have to come from behind. The Golden Eagles went ahead 7-2, forcing a Highlander timeout. Out of that timeout, Radford went on a 7-1 run to retake the lead. Roberts added two kills and a block while Alaina Roman served up two aces to throw the set back in Radford's favor.

Things were tight as neither team grabbed major edge, but Radford was able to consistently stay ahead by a few points thanks to kills from Gabriela Smolenska, Moore and Miller. Up 18-17, Radford secured a 3-0 run for their most breathing room of the set. Radford ended the set on another 3-0 run as Lea Gage and Smolenska each picked up kills to help Radford win set two 25-20 and go ahead 2-0 in the match.

Radford didn't let up and posted their most dominant set to finish things off. Radford would immediately build a 10-2 lead as the Highlanders offense overpowered the Golden Eagles. During the run, Radford got kills from Miller (1), Sloss (2), Hatch (3) and Roberts (2). From there, Radford took care of business to seal the win. A majority of the Highlanders points came on the offensive end behind kills and a few aces, allowing for a lopsided 25-12 finish and 3-0 victory against the weekend hosts.

GAME TWO
The Highlanders' second match of the day featured a trio of sets that didn't quite go their way. In set one, Samford and Radford traded points early. Miller got her solid evening off to a good start with some kills while Radford continued its hot hitting. Samford hit similarly and used some strong serving to jump ahead of Radford 16-11.

The Highlanders weren't able to stop the Bulldogs attack late, as their last six points all came off kills and they took the first set 25-17. Down 1-0, Radford fell behind in set two 9-4 after a 4-1 run. The Highlanders battled back to even the set at the midway point 15-15 behind kills from Sloss and Miller.

An 11-3 run to close the set by Samford proved too much to overcome, though, as Samford took set two 25-18. A tough break to the start of the third set saw Radford down 10-4. It was a deficit Radford wasn't able to overcome as Samford pulled away 25-15 and won the match 3-0.
