Men’s Soccer Cruises Over Longwood Behind Akimoto’s Brace

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Radford men's soccer program posted their most lopsided conference victory in three seasons Saturday afternoon in a dominant 3-0 victory over Longwood fueled by Kenshin Akimoto's two goals.

KEY STATS
  • Carter McClain's opening goal, and game-winner, was the third of the season for the sophomore.
  • Akimoto's brace is the first of his young Radford career, boosting his season goal total to a team-best four.
  • Hiromasa Iwai added two assists on the goals, marking his fourth assist in the last four matches.
  • Ben Miller posted his second shutout of the season, his first in conference play, and worked hard for the decision with four tough saves.

PLAY BY PLAY
Through the early stretches of the match the Highlanders would have to battle not just one but two weather delays. Radford and Longwood battled through the multiple stoppages and both teams seemed to be settled with entering the half scoreless until the Highlanders offense came alive in the final minutes.

After Akimoto made a solid pass into the top of the box to the waiting Iwai, the resulting shot ricocheted towards McClain. The sophomore collected the ball and wasted no time threading a shot through two defenders and the goalie into the back corner of the net with just one minute left in the half.

Now up 1-0, the Highlanders weren't settling with the lone goal advantage. Radford's pressure continued on the Lancers, and it paid off in the 61st minute. The trio of Akimoto, Iwai and Fukai Imamura, all hailing from Japan, combined to create chaos in the box. Imamura crossed the ball into Iwai's chest which landed perfectly for Akimoto to seal the deal for a 2-0 lead.

Just a few minutes later, Radford struck again in the 70th minute. Anton Jerga crossed a perfect ball into the box that Akimoto was able to dive head-first into to find the back of the net once again and make it a 3-0 lead. Radford's defense held the rest of the way to finish the shutout and 3-0 victory.
