Offense Explodes for Men’s Soccer in Decisive Win over Howard

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford men's soccer program dominated from end-to-end Saturday afternoon in a decisive 3-0 victory over Howard, their first win of the season.

KEY STATS
  • The three goals in the match are the most scored by Radford's offense since October 24th, 2023, in a win over Virginia Tech.
  • Carter McClain and Hiromasa Iwai both netted their first career goals.
  • Radford outshot Howard 15-7 and only conceded two corners on the defensive end.
  • Ben Miller was perfect in the net for Radford with four saves.

PLAY BY PLAY
While both teams settled into the match, offense was hard to come by as no shot came on goal until the 22nd minute. That shot, though, would give Radford the early lead. Thanks to an incredible cross from Anton Jerga, Kenshin Akimoto was able to strike a perfect header to give Radford the 1-0 edge.

The Highlanders cruised through the rest of the first half, as Howard only struck on goal twice in the 27th and 35th minutes, which keeper Miller was easily able to smother. Out the gates in the second half, the Highlanders kicked up their offensive intensity and created multiple opportunities on goal.

In the 54th minute, the Highlanders struck again. Newcomer to the squad this season Carter McClain was able to infiltrate the Bison box and got off a strong shot that was deflected by the opposing goalie. McClain ran straight into the rebounding shot and redirected it back towards the net to give Radford a 2-0 lead.

The Highlanders kept up the attack and in the 71st minute struck again. This time it was Dax Booth and Iwai combining for the third goal of the game. The assist was Booth's second of the season and the goal Iwai's first in his Division I career.

The physical match saw multiple bookings down the stretch, but Radford's defense never broke to preserve the shutout and eventual 3-0 final.
