Men’s Basketball Sees Win Streak Snapped Against Bulldogs

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford men's basketball program stormed back late but ultimately fell short and saw their four-game winning streak snapped against UNC Asheville Saturday afternoon 91-72.

KEY STATS
  • Dennis Parker Jr. was back in 20+ points again today, scoring all 24 points without a three pointer.
  • Frederik Erichsen came alive late for his first Big South game scoring in double figures, finishing with 11 points.
  • Whistles were aplenty in the contest, with both teams drawing a combined 48 fouls that resulted in 61 total free throws.
  • Radford's 3-26 (11.6%) shooting margin from three was their lowest of the season.

PLAY BY PLAY
The first half of Saturday's contest was an electric affair that saw both offenses moving quickly and scoring often. UNC Asheville jumped ahead early 7-3 with a Jaylon Johnson three marking Radford's offensive output early. That three would be one of just three the Highlanders would hit overall in the game.

Another three by the Bulldogs pushed them ahead further, but five unanswered including an and-one from Parker Jr. kept Radford close at 10-9. The Bulldogs leaned heavily on the three pointer early and it worked; multiple threes caught the offense on fire and pushed the team to a 21-13 advantage at the 14:16 mark.

The Highlanders stormed back thanks to five straight points from Erichsen, a dunk from Brown, and a quick layup from Parker Jr. that made it just a 24-22 Bulldogs lead. Radford wasn't quite able to grab their first lead as UNC Asheville connected on three straight triples to pull back ahead 33-22. Both teams traded 6-0 scoring runs, and Radford stared down a 45-36 deficit at the half.

Contrary to the opening half, the back half of the game saw the pace of play grind to a halt. Radford would get early makes from Parker Jr., Lukas Walls, Jones and Johnson to crawl back to 51-46. With 15 minutes to play, the Bulldogs found their offensive rhythm again and rattled off six straight to reestablish the lead.

From that 15-minute mark, Radford wouldn't hit a shot from the field again until seven minutes remained in the game. Free throws kept Radford within striking distance, allowing Radford to mount a comeback attempt. After free throws from Parker Jr. and Johnson, Jones broke the ice with a three to make it a 74-59 deficit. Radford's new defensive pressure created chaos for UNC Asheville in the backcourt allowing back-to-back layups from Johnson and Erichsen to pull Radford as close as 76-68.

From there, the Highlanders went cold and the Bulldogs went to work sealing the game away at the free throw line. Jones and Erichsen provided the two lone made shots for Radford over the final four minutes of play, allowing UNC Asheville to hang on in the 91-72 final.

AROUND THE BIG SOUTH
  • Winthrop burst ahead early and stayed hot to defeat USC Upstate on the road 71-50.
  • High Point and Charleston Southern were locked in an intense game for the full 40 minutes and then some, with the Panthers pulling out a big road win in overtime 84-82.
  • Longwood used a big first half advantage to down Presbyterian at home 77-70.
