Efficient Shooting Night Pushes Highlanders Past Buccaneers

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Radford men's basketball program picked up another big road win Thursday night using a strong shooting performance to defeat Charleston Southern 84-75.

KEY STATS
  • Del Jones scored 20+ points for the fifth straight game, tying his career high for the fourth time this season with 27 points.
  • Jones was also perfect from the free throw line, 10-for-10, the best shooting mark in a game by a Highlander since Bryan Antoine also shot 10-for-10 in 2024.
  • While most point categories were in tight margins, Radford was more efficient at the three-point line and free throw line outshooting the Buccaneers by 21% and 17%, respectively.
  • Radford's 14 three-point attempts were a season low while Charleston Southern's 32 attempts were a season high for an opponent.
  • The win in Charleston is Radford's first since 2023. Radford has also won three of their first four Big South road games for the first time since the same season where they started 6-0 on the road.

PLAY BY PLAY
Jones got the Highlanders offense rolling early as he provided the first five points and Jaylon Johnson dropped back-to-back threes to give Radford a 10-9 edge. The Highlanders elite efficiency from three rolled throughout the half as Louie Jordan and Dennis Parker Jr. hit Radford's next to tries to pace the team ahead 28-21.

Four straight points by Johnson propelled Radford to its biggest lead so far at 34-23 with 6:49 left in the half. Jones took over from there scoring six straight of his own. In the final two minutes, Parker Jr. tried to vault the Highlanders ahead even further with an and-one three-pointer plus a buzzer beater heave. The and-one counted, but unfortunately after reviewing the play the refs waved off his heave making it a 44-28 Radford lead halfway home.

Similar to how the game started, the second half started quiet on the offensive end for both teams. A free throw and layup from Parker Jr. accounted for all the offense from both sides through the first three minutes. A 6-2 run thanks to driving layups from Johnson and Parker Jr. with two free throws from Tyson Brown put Radford up 53-36.

The Buccaneers, no stranger to playing from behind in Big South play, didn't go away quietly. The hosts scored seven straight thanks in part to finding their stride from three. Jones cut that run up with some free throws, but Charleston Southern kept at it tightening the game back to single digits at 57-49 with 13:10 to play.

Brown provided his first two of many big makes down the stretch paired with a jumper from Mari Jordan who also caught fire late in stretch time. Two more threes had the Buccaneers right back within reach as Jones and Johnson combined again for seven points to keep the lead at 70-59.

With under five to play, a free throw party broke out as both teams headed to the line for most of their scoring. The Buccaneers kept chipping away, pulling as close as within five at 79-74 with a minute to go, but the Highlanders had an answer at each end. In the final seconds, Johnson and Parker Jr. put the game away at the free throw line as Radford held on for the 84-75 win.
