Highlanders Move with Ease, Dispatch Gardner-Webb 82-70

RADFORD, Va. – Radford's offense was on full display in another dominant victory Thursday night, dispatching Gardner-Webb 82-70 for their second straight win.

KEY STATS
  • Dennis Parker Jr. hit over half the shots he took to lead the offensive efforts with 22 points including a trio of threes.
  • Del Jones got it done from the free throw line, hitting a perfect 10-of-10 free throws for the second time this season.
  • Tyson Brown tied his career high in rebounds with 14, finishing with 11 points for the double-double.
  • In his first start of the season, Brennan Rigsby Jr. stepped up big for Radford with 10 points and a team high five assists.

PLAY BY PLAY
There were flashes of Gardner-Webb's hot start in the two team's last meeting as the Runnin' Bulldogs burst ahead 5-0 early. A dunk from Parker Jr. got Radford's offense going while threes from Walls and Parker Jr. got the Highlanders ahead 12-10. After a driving make from Mari Jordan and three from Louie Jordan, Radford took a six-point lead and never looked back.

Brown, who nearly had a double-double in the first half alone, had makes down low while Rigsby Jr. made an immediate impact in his first start of the season to push Radford ahead 25-14. After a little cold spell that ran three minutes without a floor make, Rigsby Jr. provided five straight points that had Radford ahead 33-23 with 6:22 to play.

Brown kept rolling pushing Radford ahead even further. L. Jordan added one more three before the half ended as the Highlanders snuck in four free throws over the final minutes to cap a 48-34 advantage at the break.

Four minutes into the second half, the Highlanders offense came out sluggish but a Walls three pointer got things rolling again at the 16:38 mark. A 9-0 run kicked off by a three from L. Jordan and four straight free throws from Jones and M. Jordan gave Radford its biggest lead so far at 61-40.

From there, the Highlanders were able to just cruise to the finish line. Using mostly free throws, Gardner-Webb wasn't able to make a threat even with a late run that tightened the final score. As the buzzer went final, Radford held on to win 82-70.

AROUND THE BIG SOUTH
  • In a close game throughout, Winthrop survived a late rally from USC Upstate for a 68-64 victory.
  • High Point was dominant on national television, taking out Radford's Saturday opponent UNC Asheville 74-48.
  • After trailing by 12 at the half, Presbyterian came back with a force to defend the home court and knock off Longwood 72-65.

UP NEXT
It's another quick turnaround for the Highlanders as the team will go on the road to face UNC Asheville this Thursday, February 21st. Action will tip at 4:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
