Tough Second Half Downs Highlanders at Lancers

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Radford men's basketball program had a strong start but came apart late as Longwood earned a 90-74 win to closer the regular season.

KEY STATS
  • Del Jones was back above 20 points for the Highlanders and led the team's scoring efforts.
  • Brenn Rigsby Jr. was back in the starting lineup for Radford and hit a season high of 15 points.
  • The Highlanders were -15 in the rebound battle and gave up 14 second chance points as the Lancers won the battle down low.
  • Radford sent Longwood to the free throw line often and the Lancers took advantage, hitting 30 of 35 attempts.

PLAY BY PLAY
Radford's offense started hot as Jones and Parker Jr. began the game with a three and dunk, respectively. After an and-one by Walls and a three by Parker Jr., Radford led 12-7 at the first media break. Out of it, Radford went on an 8-0 run all within the paint with Mari Jordan supplying four points in the run.

Both teams would go cold until right under the 10-minute mark where Brennan Rigsby Jr. was able to grab a steal and dunk in transition. That got Radford rolling as Rigsby Jr. connected again and M. Jordan landed a three. Up 35-26 with four to go in the half, Radford's offense would go cold again and only hit one shot down the stretch. That make come from Jones, which gave Radford a 37-34 lead at the half.

The Lancers stormed out of the break and immediately put the Highlanders on their heels scoring seven unanswered. Frederik Erichsen ended that run with a three, but the Lancers would never let go of that lead the rest of the way.

Radford's offense was cold and looking for answers and Jones stepped up to fill the void. The sophomore hit back-to-back shots around the 15-minute mark to try and keep the Highlanders on pace with the Lancers. Parker Jr. would add another transition dunk, but Longwood kept firing and led 58-50 at the under-12 media.

Out of the break, free throws started to pile up on Radford. Longwood, a great free throw shooting team, did major damage scoring 23 points at the charity stripe in the second half. Radford would trail by as much as 17 with four minutes to play. Late hits from Erichsen and Louie Jordan wouldn't be enough, as Longwood earned the 90-74 final.
