Highlanders Drop Thriller to Monmouth

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford Highlanders women's lacrosse team showed tremendous fight, rallying from down a handful several times to nearly pick up their second win of the season. A late goal by Monmouth, however, gave the Hawks a 16-15 win on Sunday afternoon at the SORC.

PLAY BY PLAY
Radford found themselves in an early 4-1 hole, as neither team could slow down each other's offense. It only took a couple minutes for the Highlanders to get back within one, as Hannah Hanger scored on a free position attempt, and Cheney followed to make it 4-3 with 8:17 left in the first – and neither goalkeeper had recorded a save yet. Monmouth managed to get back ahead by two by the end of the first period, but judging from the start, it would be anyone's game.

Cheney had a hat trick at the 10:20 mark in the second quarter to get within one. Cassidy Deierlein then tied it and gave Radford their first lead with 5:02 left before halftime. Maddy Driscoll added Radford's eighth goal with 3:29 left before half. Monmouth evened things at 8-8 with less than a minute left before the break, but Cheney won the draw control and a green card by Monmouth led to Molly O'Brien scoring a go-ahead goal with 17 seconds left in the half. Though it was just a one goal lead, the momentum favored the Highlanders.

Monmouth punched first to start the second half, scoring five goals on all high-percentage shots before Radford could respond. Gee stopped the Hawks from running away with it, scoring with 7:47 left in the third. The Hawks got two more scores to get a large 15-10 lead before Gee scored on a free position shot to make it a four-goal deficit for the Highlanders after three.

Cheney set the tone for the fourth period to start, scoring right away. Radford forced a turnover, and O'Brien added another beautiful goal on a great pass from Aleese Warner to get the Highlanders within two with 11:34 left. The defense forced another turnover near the crease, and Maggie Wisniewski scored to make it a one-goal game with 9:28 left. Just over a minute later, Cheney drew a foul and scored on a free position shot to make it 15-15. Monmouth had several chances to go ahead, but Ava LaManna made a clutch save on a free position attempt with just over four minutes left. The Hawks eventually scored to go ahead 16-15 with 3:32 left. Radford had a couple shots on goal late that were saved. Cheney made a desperate shot from distance with under 30 seconds remaining that sailed above the goal, with the Highlanders rally coming up one goal short in an exciting finish.
