Highlanders Take Victory in Five Events at Davidson Relays

DAVIDSON, N.C. – In what began as a cold and windy day, the Radford track and field teams helped heat up the afternoon with blistering speed on the track and strong performances in the field events to cap off a fantastic weekend at the Case Track & Field Facility on the campus of Davidson College.

NOTABLES
  • The women's 400 meters was dominated by the Highlanders, with Jeylah Hamrick leading the charge by clocking a time of 54.48 seconds. Mattie Flores clocked the sixth-fastest time on the all-time performance list with a 57.10, finishing in third place. Raichelle Cornelius was fourth in the event with a time of 57.59 seconds.
  • The women's 4x400 meter relay team of Cornelius, Jordan Jackson, Jaslyne Robinson, and Hamrick won the event with a time of 3:44.91 – not quite as fast as the school record last week, but still plenty good enough for the overall win. The other 4x400 meter relay team of Flores, Grace Onwi, Janaya Moore, and Kandace McIvor also reached the podium, placing third with a time of 3:55.17.
  • Robinson won the 400-meter hurdles for the second straight weekend, this time with a time of 1:01.54. Including relays, the senior has taken victory in four of five events competed in to start the outdoor season.
  • Jaelynn Joiner was victories for the Highlanders in the triple jump, posting a best mark of 11.87 meters (38'11.5"). This was almost a full half meter better than the second place finisher. The result is tied for the third best performance in the event in Radford history, with Madison Anderson also reaching a triple jump of 11.87 meters in 2019.
  • The most fun had by a Radford athlete had to be Kaley Tanner, winning the 3000-meter steeplechase. Battling with Riley Shope of North Greenville throughout the race, Tanner pulled ahead on the final lap to take her first win in any track event as a Highlander. The time of 11:20.98 was also the eighth-fastest in Radford history.
  • Leah Moye matched her personal best in the 100-meter hurdles and took second place in the event by one thousandth of a second (14.565 to 14.566) ahead of Hannah Casey from Davidson.
  • Makayla Nelson bettered her PR by one hundredth (12.08 seconds) to place third in the 100-meter dash.
  • Moore's time of 24.80 seconds in the 200-meter dash rewarded the freshman with a second overall finish in the event. The time also ranks eighth on Radford's all-time performance list.
  • Kayla Fields finished second and Cora Gentzel placed third in the 3000 meters, both hitting a new PR and placing in the top five on the Radford all-time performance list.
  • In his first outdoor high jump, Andrew Piccataggi placed fourth with a mark of 1.90 meters (6'2.75"), making him one of seven Radford athletes all-time to eclipse the 1.90-meter mark in the event.
  • On his last attempt, Tyrique Taylor launched the shot 15.20 meters to take fifth place. Taylor's PR bumps him to fourth on the Radford all-time performance list.
  • Azrael Cabusao ran a personal best in the 3000 meters to lead the Highlanders with a sixth-place finish in the event with a time of 8:52.47. This is the ninth best time on the Radford all-time performance list.
