Radford Sees Sweep Slip Away on Sunday

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford Highlanders baseball team appeared to be on their way to their third win of the weekend, leading by a run going to the ninth. A Longwood rally dashed those hops, as the Lancers avoided being swept by the Highlanders by winning 6-5 on Sunday afternoon at Carter Memorial Stadium.

After getting the final out of the seventh and tossing a quiet eighth, Trey Ludy tried to get seven outs for the save. The junior got two outs before allowing a walk and single to put the go-ahead run on base. That's when Longwood's Jae'Dan Carter came through in the clutch, hitting a go-ahead three-run triple off the left center field wall to put the Lancers ahead. Ludy got the final out in the next batter, but the damage was done. Longwood's Brady Hoover entered to pitch the bottom of the ninth and retired Radford to finish off the contest.

Radford started out behind 3-0 after one inning but rallied to lead through the late innings. Brady Whitacre put a ground ball in play for a fielder's choice to cash in one of Radford's two singles in the second to score Brady Powell and make it 3-1 in the second. Devin Parks added his first of two big hits on the day, rocketing a double into the left center field gap to plate Junho Son from second and get the Highlanders within a run. Breckin Nace tied the game in the fifth with an RBI double, and Parks followed with a single up the middle to make it 5-3 Highlanders.

Making his first start of the season, Daniel Quintana pitched well enough to earn a win but eventually had to settle for the no decision. The right-hander bounced back after a tough first inning to retire nine-straight Lancers at one point. He struck out a half dozen and left with a 5-3 lead. Joshua Millville also got five outs after Quintana's exit while striking out a pair. He allowed one run and was pulled for Ludy in the seventh.

The Highlanders had hits from all nine starters in the lineup, totaling 11 to Longwood's nine. Parks' three RBI led the team. Unfortunately, the cleanup-hitting center fielder left the game in the fifth after an injury on a pick off play at first base.

Radford is set to play their fourth of an eight-game homestand on Tuesday, March 31, taking on Virginia Tech in a New River Valley battle. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. and can be attended for free by all fans or watched on ESPN+.
