Men’s Basketball Upended in Big South Semifinals Heartbreaker

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Radford men's basketball program came up short in a thrilling overtime battle with sixth-seed Presbyterian 91-85 despite big showings from Jaylon Johnson, Del Jones, and Lukas Walls.

KEY STATS
  • After being in and out of action over the last couple weeks, Johnson was huge for the Highlanders with his third game of 20+ points this season, two of which came against Presbyterian.
  • Del Jones (22 points) and Lukas Walls (18 points) also led the scoring efforts, with Jones tallying six assists.
  • In the overtime period, Presbyterian hit four of their five shot attempts while Radford hit just two of nine.
  • Radford's 24% mark from three and 61% mark from the free throw line hurt but they were strong in points off turnovers (20-10) and second chance points (21-12).

PLAY BY PLAY
After a long wait from the previous quarterfinals game running late that pushed back the start time an hour, both teams came out sluggish with made shots hard to come by. The cold start leaned heavier on the Presbyterian end as the Blue Hose scored just two points through the opening nine minutes.

While the Highlanders weren't shooting lights out, the team was able to get offensive answers from Lukas Walls and Jaylon Johnson early. The duo combined for seven of Radford's 11 points early on, including a three by Johnson that forced a Presbyterian timeout with 12:25 to play.

Up 11-2, the tune quickly flipped for both ends. Radford got four second chance points from Mari Jordan while Presbyterian broke the lid off the hoop for a pair of threes that tightened the game to 18-11.

With 5:51 left in the half, Walls capped his strong start with a three deep in the corner that pushed Radford ahead 22-14. Del Jones also came alive late in the half including a step back three right before the buzzer that gave the Highlanders a more decisive 36-28 edge before the break.

Out of the break, Radford kept rolling as Jones immediately checked in with an and-one. Tyson Brown and Jones combined for another quick four points as both teams traded buckets with Radford ahead 43-36.

After getting things as close as 43-41 with 15:15 to play, Radford ripped off an 11-3 run thanks in big part to Johnson hitting a pair of threes. Now ahead 54-44, Presbyterian kept chipping away to pull the game closer again. Cold shooting plagued Radford down the stretch as the team relied on makes from Dennis Parker Jr. and Walls to slightly pace ahead.

At the under-four media break, the two squads were now tied 63-63. Walls had a big free throw out of the break and Johnson was later fouled on a second chance opportunity converting all three free throws for a renewed 67-63 lead. Presbyterian responded with four straight, though, tying the game at 67-67.

Second chance points continued to pile up for Radford as the team scored five straight with a big three from Walls. Presbyterian kept firing from deep, though, hitting a heave from midcourt at the buzzer to tie the game once again at 77-all and force overtime.

In overtime, the shots just wouldn't fall for Radford. Presbyterian got big makes down low and kept their pace while the Highlanders fell behind and into a deficit they didn't climb out of. After an exhilarating end, Radford saw their tournament run come to a close in the quarterfinals with the 91-85 final.
