Highlanders Run Out of Steam in Loss to Winthrop

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford Highlanders lacrosse team was engaged in a back-and-forth contest between Winthrop, searching for their first conference triumph. After going ahead by two goals in the third, the Eagles finished with seven unanswered, and the Highlanders fell, 15-10, on Wednesday afternoon at the SORC.

KEY STATS
  • Maddy Driscoll led the Highlanders with three goals, with all of them coming in the first half. Evie Gee and Ashlyn Bell also scored twice, respectively.
  • The Highlanders were active defensively, causing 17 turnovers. Sam Flippo caused six to lead both teams. She also added six ground ball pickups. It's the second time Flippo has caused six turnovers in a game this season.
  • Radford drops to 0-2 in the Big South, while Winthrop picks up their first win and is now 1-2 in the conference.
PLAY BY PLAY
Gee got the scoring started by finding the back of the net in the opening two minutes, scoring on the assist by Cassidy Deierlein. Winthrop got one back after winning the ensuing draw control, then scored on a free position shot to make it 2-1. Bell scored a fantastic answer, running from behind the net and scoring in a no-look spot to even it up. The Eagles again went ahead briefly before Driscoll scored her first tally with 5:46 left in the first. The Eagles finished the first on a two-goal run, scoring with a man-up and a man-down to finish the period.

The Highlanders got right back in it, with Driscoll finding her second and a great individual effort by Maggie Wisniewski to tie it at 5-5. Radford took their first lead since the start with 10:14 left in the second, as Flippo forced a turnover, raced down the field, a fed Gee for a 6-5 lead. A turnover by Winthrop led to Driscoll's third goal with 7:20 left before halftime. After the media timeout, Winthrop's defense held firm to end the quarter on a 2-0 run and draw even at the break.

With clouds approaching, the Eagles retook the lead at 8-7 about four minutes into the second half. On the ensuing draw control, Hannah Hanger won the draw and raced past the entire Winthrop defense and scored in a one-on-one with the goalkeeper to make it 8-8. Halfway through the quarter, lightning was detected in the area, and the teams spent the next roughly 40 minutes waiting out the weather. Though they began in the rain, the threat had passed. Molly O'Brien posed a different threat for Winthrop, as she scored another go-ahead goal that made it 9-8 Highlanders. A quick answer by Bell made it 10-8 home team. The Eagles then took a timeout and got right back into it, scoring three times to end the third period and be up 11-10 with 15 minutes left.

Winthrop's goalkeeper made two saves early in the fourth period that set the tone for the rest of the game. The Eagles' lead grew to three halfway through the final quarter. O'Brien had a chance on a free position shot with seven minutes left, but it was saved, which really put the pressure on Radford. The Eagles were methodical in keeping long possessions. In addition, they added two more late goals to take away any doubt, making it a 15-10 final.
