FARMVILLE, Va. – The Radford softball program fell in a tight battle at Longwood Friday night, dropping the weekend series opener in a 1-0 final.

PLAY BY PLAY
Offensive struggles plagued the Highlanders as the team was shut out for their second straight conference game despite another strong pitching performance. Dakota Redmon was strong in the circle for Radford and retired the first three she faced in the first.

Hailey Scott picked up Radford's first hit in the second but with two outs already in the inning the scoring threat didn't last long. Longwood struck for their first hit as well in the second, but Redmon quickly retired three straight to keep things scoreless. The third was more of the same, but Longwood struck for a big run in the fourth with a solo homer to take a 1-0 lead.

The Highlanders looked to take advantage of the first two runners reaching in the fifth thanks to an error and a walk. Layla Miles, who reached first on a pinch-hit opportunity, would be stranded at second however as the Lancers escaped the jam.

Redmon picked up another strikeout in a scoreless fifth and worked around an error to toss a scoreless sixth. Radford's offense mounted a comeback in the seventh as the team got hits from Scott, Isabel Harrison and Grace Bechtol to load the bases with just one out. A strikeout and pop out ended the game, though, as Radford fell in the 1-0 final.

UP NEXT
The Highlanders will return to action for a doubleheader to close out the weekend tomorrow afternoon against the Lancers. The first game kicks off at 1:00 p.m., with both streaming on ESPN+.
