Highlanders’ Bats Stay Quiet in Series Finale Loss at High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Radford pitching staff kept the game close, but the Highlander hitters failed to get anything going, dropping the series-deciding contest to the High Point Panthers, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at Willard Stadium.

A leadoff double by the Panthers helped the home side get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first. Radford starter Matthew Lefevers managed to strand a runner at second to keep it a one-run deficit after one. Brady Powell singled and survived a bat inspection by the umpires in the second, and Noah Toole came through by slicing a triple into left field that plated Powell and made it a 1-1 game in the second.

Lefevers breezed through the second and third innings, but Radford left the bases loaded without scoring in the top of the third. High Point got after Lefevers in the fourth, getting three hits to score two runs to go ahead 3-1. Daniel Quintana entered to pitch the fifth and gave up a fourth run in the inning, making the deficit three runs for Radford midway through the contest.

Radford ended a streak of nine-straight retired with a leadoff walk worked by Toole. The Panthers managed to avoid giving up a run, however, with a pair of strikeouts to get to the seventh inning stretch. Corey Costello kept High Point from running away with things, pitching a quick seventh and working around a couple of baserunners in the eighth to give the Highlanders one last shot. However, the High Point closer tossed a 1-2-3 final inning to give High Point a 4-1 win and series win.

Toole was the lone Highlander to reach base multiple times with a single and walk. Lefevers took his first loss of the season, allowing three runs (all earned) on five hits with no walks. Costello once again came in and did a great job in relief, holding High Point scoreless over three innings. High Point's Aidan Paul tossed six one-run innings for the win, while Dylan Story added a pair of strikeouts for the save.
