Quintana Tosses Gem, Highlanders Shut Out Gardner-Webb

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford Highlanders baseball team needed a win to secure another conference series on Sunday, and a pair of pitchers came through in the clutch. Daniel Quintana and Trey Ludy combined to shut out the Runnin' Bulldogs, 3-0, at Carter Memorial Stadium.

Quintana, the redshirt junior who made just his second start of the season, held Gardner-Webb hitless through the first six innings. He began the game with three consecutive groundouts, added his first strikeout in the second, and allowed his first walk in the third. The Haymarket, Virginia native had two runners on in the top of the fourth due to a walk and error but got a flyout to center to get out of trouble.

The Highlanders got their starter some run support in the fifth. Brooks Simpson worked a walk and moved to second on an infield hit by Junho Son. Hunter Keen came through in the clutch, singling home Simpson from second to make it 1-0 Radford midway through.

Quintana worked around a walk in the sixth, getting two thirds through the game without allowing a knock. Gardner-Webb got their first hit in the seventh, then followed with another to chase the Radford starter from the game. Alex Guerra went to Trey Ludy, and one of the Highlanders' best relievers got a strikeout to get to the stretch, up 1-0.

Keen added a second RBI via a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh, and Alex Levesque put a ground ball in play that brought home a run with the bases loaded in the eighth. Those runs gave Radford some breathing room, which they did not necessarily need. Ludy retired the side in order in both the eighth and ninth innings for his fifth save, striking out five of his seven batters faced.

Radford tallied eight hits total in the win, with leadoff hitter Son and Brady Powell adding a couple. Levesque's one-out double in the seventh was the game's only multi-base hit for either side, as the win gusting in kept flyballs to hang in the air for the outfielders.

The win puts Radford in fifth place in the conference at 7-8, half a game clear of Charleston Southern and a game up of Gardner-Webb. The Highlanders are less than one game behind Longwood who sit in third in the conference at 7-7.

The Highlanders hit the road several times the following week, with a midweek contest against Davidson on tap. First pitch from Wilson Field is set for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21 and will also be on ESPN+.
