Radford Bullpen Holds Off USC Upstate For Series-Opening Win

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford Highlanders baseball team tacked on six runs through the first three innings, and the bullpen managed to stand firm the rest of the way for a 6-4 win over USC Upstate on Thursday night at Carter Memorial Stadium.

Big hits from the top of the lineup proved to be the difference for Radford. Trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the first, Junho Son started the rally with a leadoff double, and the Seoul, South Korea native scored on Hunter Keen's single to tie things up two batters into the frame. Eli Hudgins doubled to put two into scoring position, and Breckin Nace helped his cause on the mound with a two-run single up the middle to make it 3-1.

Son banged another double, this one the opposite way to left, to plate Brady Whitacre with two gone in the bottom of the second to add on. Keen made it back-to-back doubles, scoring Son and giving Radford a full four-run lead in the second. After Nace tossed a one-two-three top of the third, the Highlanders cashed in on two walks and a hit, with Whitacre's groundball to shortstop getting Nace home to make it 6-1.

After giving up an unearned run in the first, Nace got through four before running into trouble in the fifth. He was unable to get out of the inning without being charged with three runs. However, Corey Costello kept Radford in front by holding the damage to three runs in the fifth. Costello then settled in and fired a quiet sixth and seventh inning before being pulled in the eighth. He allowed just one run and one walk with a strikeout to earn the win in relief.

Though the offense was stifled by the USC Upstate bullpen, Mason Hatcher and Trey Ludy held firm to close things out. Hatcher retired both of his batters to finish off the eighth inning, while Ludy picked up his fourth save of the season with a quiet ninth.

Son had a terrific night offensively, accounting for two runs on two doubles with an RBI. Keen also had a pair of knocks and RBI. Nace was on base three times, working a walk and hitting a pair of singles. Radford pitchers limited USC Upstate to just one extra-base hit and four total on the game.
