Highlanders Crush Davidson for Largest Win of Season

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Radford Highlanders baseball team (19-18) broke out the bats and piled on the runs, scoring seven times in the first and in the seventh innings to topple Davidson (20-18), 18-2, on Tuesday night at Wilson Field. It's their biggest win in terms of margin of victory and runs scored since beating Queens 22-5 on April 24, 2024.

Junho Son, Hunter Keen, and Eli Hudgins loaded the bases to start, and the route was on from there. Cleanup hitter Breckin Nace singled up the middle to score a pair, and Devin Parks followed with a double to put Radford up 4-0, five batters in. Davidson's starter was pulled, but the Highlanders were not done in the first inning. Parks and Noah Toole scored on Wildcat miscues on ball four to Brady Whitacre, and Keen reached for a second time in the inning via hit by pitch to force home a seventh run in the first.

The Highlanders went up by 10 runs in the third inning, cashing in more free passes. Son reached on a fielder's choice that plated Whitacre on a bad throw, and Keen added a sacrifice fly for his second RBI to make it 9-0. Nace lined a two-out single to right that brought home Son to make it 10-0.

Seven separate pitchers all saw action for the Highlanders, with each getting an inning of work. Corey Costello struck out a pair in the first, while Andrew Steinhaus threw just 12 pitches for a quiet second. Eli Baker and Parker Noonan each allowed one run, respectively, but neither got into too much trouble with the large lead. The trifecta of Mason Self, Hunter Howard, and Mason Hatcher each retired the side in order, with all three combining for three strikeouts.

Hudgins provided the biggest hit in terms of distance, smashing a solo homer to right that made it 11-2 Highlanders in the fifth. Needing at least one run to enforce the 10-run rule in the seventh, Radford got seven more for good measure. Keen made the lead 10 runs with a double that scored Brooks Simpson, and Son quickly followed by scoring on a wild pitch. Keen came home on Nace's RBI fielder's choice, and another Parks double plated Radford's 15th run. Carrington Aaron joined the scoring party with a two-RBI single, and Tyler Sparrer became the sixth different Highlander to add an RBI with a sac fly.

Nine different Highlanders had a run and hit, while seven scored multiple times. Hudgins touched home plate three times, finishing 1-for-2 with three walks in addition to the homer. Son also scored thrice with one hit and one walk. Keen, Nace, and Parks were the three Highlanders with multiple hits, while the group also each had three RBI, respectively. In summary, Radford had more multi-base hits (5) than Davidson had hits (3) in total.
