Highlanders Hang Tough in Close Loss to Wofford

RADFORD, Va. – Despite already being locked in as the No. 5 seed of the upcoming Big South Tournament, the Radford Highlanders women's lacrosse team nearly pulled what would have been a stunning upset in the regular season finale, dropping a 15-13 loss to Wofford on a rainy Saturday afternoon at the SORC.

The Highlanders finished the regular season 4-13 overall and 3-5 in conference play.

KEY STATS
  • Trailing by five goals at the half, Radford scored five times in the third period to tie it 10-10 and retie the game twice more.
  • Cassidy Deierlein and Alyssa Yost each contributed a hat trick, respectively. It's Deierlein's fourth three-goal performance this season. Yost has scored four goals across three games since returning from injury on April 18.
  • Maddy Driscoll added five assists to bring her season total to 28. That's the third-most in program history. Her 37 assists in her career are also the sixth-most in a Radford career.
  • Hannah Hanger secured six draw controls, most of which occurred in the second half, which helped the Highlanders in their comeback.
  • Ava LaManna totaled nine saves in the loss.
PLAY BY PLAY
In a game that would be defined by the adverse weather in several heavy rain showers, it was the Terriers who dealt with adversity out of the gates. Molly O'Brien converted on an early free position shot to put the Highlander ahead 1-0, two minutes in. The Terriers quickly answered to take a 3-1 lead before Driscoll found the net to make it 3-2 at the first quarter media break. Wofford attacked two more times, but the Highlanders responded well. Evie Gee scored with a man up advantage to make it 5-3, and Driscoll rocketed a shot past the Wofford goalkeeper in the closing seconds to make it 5-4 after one.

Almost like clockwork, the Terriers got two quick goals to begin the second quarter. However, they also picked up a yellow card shortly after, which led to freshman Olivia Johnson scoring her first goal of the season. Wofford got one goal back to make it 8-5 at the media break, then wore down the Radford attack to score twice more as the heavens opened. At half, the Terriers looked to be on the verge of pulling away, outshooting Radford 20-11 with a five-goal advantage.

The Highlanders came out ready to go on defense, as LaManna made a nice save to begin the third, which led to a goal by Maggie Wisniewski, assisted on a nice feed by Gee. On the next trip, Johnson nearly found the net again, hitting the post. However, a turnover after a Wofford rebound led to Deierlein scoring to make it 10-7. Wofford saved a free position shot shortly after, but Yost was at the right place at the right time, securing the ground ball rebound and driving to score to make it 10-8. Yost scored again to make it 10-9 at the third-quarter media timeout. The comeback was complete shortly afterwards, as Deierlein found space in the crease to fire a goal that tied it at 10-10 with 4:25 left in the third. The Terriers finally answered, taking advantage of a green card issued to Sam Flippo that made it 11-10, then followed 12-10 before the third ended.

Both teams began to amp up the defensive pressure, as turnovers mounted early in the fourth both ways. Yost secured the hat trick with 10 minutes left on another great pass from Driscoll. Deierlein shortly later was turned away on a free position shot, but another foul by Wofford led to Mady Cheney finding the net to even things up at 12-12 into the final media break. The Terriers got back into the lead on a free position shot before Deierlein scored for a third time to make it 13-13 with 4:43 left. For the second time in the game, Johnson hit the post after Hanger secured the following draw control, and a long possession resulted in a go-ahead goal by Wofford with 3:15 left. The Terriers scored again with 1:53 left and managed to essentially hold onto possession for the rest of the match.

UP NEXT
The Highlanders await the final release of the Big South Tournament bracket by the conference, as there are several tiebreakers still being worked out for the No. 6 seed. Radford has locked themselves into the No. 5 seed and will play in the first round on Tuesday, April 28 at a time to be determined at the site of the No. 4 seed.
